ATSF boxcar with grain doors
With the recent feedback on grain doors you all helped with I took an Intermountain Santa Fe boxcar kit I had and added grain doors. The kit is factory paint, all I did was to add a ATSF reweigh station, light weight and a repack stencil. Before adding the roof I cut some 2” x 8” HO wood strips I had and stained a few for some variation. Kadee steel roof walk replaced the kit’s supplied one. The doors are held on with double sided scrap booking tape.

This is a great reminder that despite the complaints that we have about some of the major suppliers their cars can look really great on a layout.

The grain door looks really good! Thanks for sharing the technique. Makes a nice kit great.

I just had some Vallejo London Gray and flat brown and mixed the two with water for a stain. You might notice I added a few ‘rough’ spots with the bristles just to add some variations on the boards. The overall car was Dullcoted (is that just a modeler’s word?) with a couple drops of tan paint to dull down the factory finish and provide a surface for the chalk marks.

Very nice car and doors, Charlie. The only thing missing is the RR ownership stenciling, and maybe those new boards are too clean.
This scene got me thinking about grain door and operation. Some modelers run grain loads with the car doors open, but I thought that doors were closed and sealed before the cars moved, so grain doors would only be seen after the car was spotted at an elevator in preparation for loading and during loading. What’s the prototype practice for moving grain in boxcars?

After loading the doors would be sealed as to keep moisture out of the car. I’m going to use this car as one that’s been recently coopered and when my local pulls the loads they’ll then spot this car under the spout for the next load. They’ll also place empties for coopering where this car sat. So it just to add more realism to my local’s work. -- Charlie Duckworth Omaha, Ne. |

They look very nice. I have used scribed sheet and scale lumber to make mine following the information provided by Sunshine Models. I haven't painted them, at least not yet. I would like to find some photos that show how the wood grain doors were stored. I have thought about installing some of the door sections in a box car model although so many models have the doors cast integral with the rest of the model. Do you have color pictures that show the variation in the color of boards? Recently I painted some wood boxes/crates. I took a paint stirring stick from The Home Depot and had them scan it so I now have a latex paint I call "new wood."

I handled a lot of these old 40 foot box cars when I was a Switchman, and the doors on a loaded car were never left open. Box cars used in bulk grain service were usually one step from the scrap yard
And if carrying Wheat or Barley they always had tape or sometimes newspaper around the door cracks to seal them and they would be fumigated to kill any bugs that might be in the load and have a hazardous placard on the tack board to warn the people that were
going to unload them to vent them first.

Attached is a photo of an actual RI grain door, taken the depot museum in Eldon IA. Color photos of prototype grain doors are found in this blog post http://industrialscenery.blogspot.com/2015/11/carrying-grain-in-boxcars.html And a photo of a paper door being nailed in place.
A good b/w photo of a FW&D grain door is found in this blog post http://prototopics.blogspot.com/2019/01/shipping-grain-by-box-car-and-grain.html
A color photo of a paper grain door is found here http://tracksidetreasure.blogspot.com/2020/04/canadas-grain-fleet-boxcars.html http://original.trainlife.com/magazines/pages/97/6949/september-1992-page-6
Remember the cars were hauling grain. While grain doors were often stored outdoors, they still were fairly clean, and certainly free of holes, defects, etc.

Sometimes cars were seen with open doors and grain doors in various conditions. But mostly I think you'd see them at grain elevators. Tim On 3/30/2022 2:20 PM, Nelson Moyer wrote:
