Candidates for Accurail cars

Clark Propst

I was just browsing through the "Classic Freight Cars" 40' box car books. I found some candidates that might work using Accurail cars.
CN 573500-574699 really cool double door car. Would like to know a little about the proto, like what roof it had?
CB&Q 28000-28599 Looks shorter and not sure of the roof?
LNE 8001-8750 again the roof is not easy to identify
GB&W 6000-6298 I can see if these cars had fishbelly underframes, ends and door, but the roofs car a mystery.

Thanks for any help given. Would like to turn my Accurail SS kits into something useable on the layout.

The Accurail 7100 kit would be a good start for a CB&Q 26000 class boxcar, it is 9'4" IH while the 28000 is 10' IH. Accurail has two car numbers in the 26000 series. These cars had Murphy raised panel roofs and 4-5 dreadnaught ends, six panel sides,  SEE RPC 31-32 Page 65-67.

Clark LNE 8001- 8750 were 1923 ARA Steel Sheathed cars. The roofs were flat panel and later rebuilt with diagonal panel roofs after WW2. They are NOTHING like any accurail kit. Now 7001-7200 are SS cars. When I discussed these cars in my clinic I was informed they were rebuilt from flats. I haven't been able to confirm that. They were built in 1916. I suppose you could start with an Accurail 7000 series 6 Panel car but the ends are wrong, the roof is wrong, and the sides would need modification.

Clark,

CN 573500 series total of 1179 cars, were themselves rebuilt from the 582000-582499 series cars. I’ve attached a side on view of the original 582000 car, which were 1-1/2 door cars, for comparison to the Accurail model. I personally don’t think the Accurail model is close enough to this particular group of cars, especially when there are more accurate choices for the Accurail car, and the basic Accurail model is a model of a CN car.  For starters, the Accurail car is a 9-foot tall car, the 573500 series were 10-0 tall, and the 582000-series cars  had one fewer “panels” to the left of the doors.
If you want an interesting “variant” on the Accurail model consider adding a 1/2 door to the car to create the 9-foot height 1-1/2 door cars?

Suggest you check out Richard Hendrickson’s Feb 1993 article in RMJ for a detailed history of these cars, and some others that the Accurail model is a good stand in for.
The article is available online -

Oh yes, the CN cars would have had Hutchins roofs, or a Viking roof that was virtually identical in appearance to the Hutchins roof.

Hope this helps,

Marty

Marty,
Those cars are too tall, being 10'-0" IH. The cars you are thinking of were CN 580000 - 580999, which were built in 1923 as 9'-0" door and a half automobile cars. Between 1933 - 1940 they were rebuilt with 6' doors and renumbered 464000 - 464999. These are the prototype for the Accurail 4300 series. We never did the auto car version because auto cars with this low IH were so rare, but New England Rail Service did a conversion kit.

Dennis,
Sorry for the confusion.

I was answering Clark who asked if the Accurail car is a good starting point for the 573500 cars. I may have confused matters by including the photo of the 10-0 1-1/2 door car, which as far as I know were rebuilt from the 573500-series cars. In any event, the Accurail car isn't a good starting point for either - especially when there are obviously closer prototypes to model using the Accurail car - including the CN's 9-foot 1-1/2 door cars.

I referred to this roster for the information:

I thought some Grand Trunk automobile boxcars could be built from Accurail kits with the addition of the Standard Car Co half door casting. The attached 1921 builder image of GT 34620 has a nine-foot interior height and a close appearance to the Accurail 4300 series kits.

Hi Eric,

Yes the Accurail 4300 series models would serve as a decent starting point for these cars.
Clark was asking about modeling a 10-foot tall double door series - I think that the Accurail model would be at best a poor stand in for the 573500 series cars, especially when, as you point out, there are some options that would produce a more accurate car.
None of which are 10-0 foot tall single sheathed double door cars, which is where this started....

Marty recommends above the TrainLife site for RMJ article.  I have several articles I wanted to view but have been getting a database error message no matter what version of the TrainLIfe website I use.

Anyone know the answer or is this resource gone for good.
