PFE R-40-4 series?

Charlie Duckworth

I’m ready to start decaling the Tichy PFE reefer and have a question about the car series.  Decaling a car for post 1950. Is the series 38563-39063?  I’ve seen one built up model numbered 71737 so a little confused.

thanks.

The reason for the higher numbers is that PFE was rebuilding older cars at the same time as the new R-40-4 cars were built, and the rebuilds were done to those standards. The rebuild cars were PFE 71273-71953.

One more question…on the A end of the car was the UP shield closest to the ladder or was the SP logo?  Being more familiar with ART the MP and a Wabash were swapped depending A or B end.

thanks again.

If you are doing the scheme with a color UP emblem, then the SP emblem is next to the door on both sides (i.e. both sides are identical). If you do the B&W UP emblem, the SP emblem goes toward the B end on both sides, thus sides not identical.

Not quite that simple, Tony.

The June 1946 double medallion scheme with color UP medallion, Black hardware and units on the dimensional and CAPY data had the SP medallion next to the door.
The January 1948 scheme with what we are now believing was a B&W UP medallion, Orange side hardware and no units on the dimensional and CAPY data still had the SP medallion next to the door.
The June 1950 scheme with a B&W UP medallion with "Railroad", Orange side hardware and no units on the dimensional and CAPY data still had the SP medallion next to the door.
The June 1951 scheme with a B&W UP medallion with "Railroad", Orange fan hardware and side sill tabs still had the SP medallion next to the door.  Periods were removed from the reporting marks.
The August 1951 scheme introduced the "SP medallion toward the B-end" scheme to cars with both UP and SP medallions on both sides.
The 1-inch horizontal stripes around the reporting marks and car number were removed in February 1952, and the end car number became 4-inch instead of 7-inch on all wood-end cars.

Hope this helps,

Yes, Dick, I have the SPH&TS book too, with all your superb information. I often refer to it. But here, I was just giving a short summary, without details, as a broad guide.
