Anyone know what the story is with the draft gear on this gon? There is some kind of linkage mechanism visible (see attached) that I haven't seen before.

That may be a Union Swing Iron, or at least something conceptually and functionally similar. The striker casting is somewhat different than what is the norm on Union Swing Irons, hence my uncertainty.

This is a trunnion type coupler carrier. It functions much as do swing hangers on passenger truck assemblies.  The coupler shank rests on the support bar which is suspended on each end by swing hanger links.  It serves to act as a coupler centering device.
