Stain for wooden barrels
Ray Hutchison
Time to finish up barrel car project, which means that I have several dozen wooden barrels to stain. Any suggestions would be appreciated; coming out new from barrel factory would likely be a light oak color? Photographs?
My only reference point is Jack Daniels barrels; every year or so my father would drive to Lynchburg and come back with an empty barrel; pour in several gallons of generic whiskey, roll the barrel every month or so, and in a year you have a couple of gallons of Jack Daniels. But those barrels were not new... Ray Hutchison |

Ray,
As always, it depends, but in general, yes, barrels should be unstained oak. https://www.etsy.com/listing/682662369/brand-new-american-oak-aging-30-gallon A Google search for “new oak barrel” will get you a plethora of other photos.

Ray, barrels were not stained, but I would put steel bands on them using thin strips of aluminum foil.

I’d paint them a light tan color, paint the banding a metal color and them give them a wash of brown oil paint to have the details picked out. -- Charlie Duckworth Omaha, Ne. |

Kevin, I agree barrels were not stained, but they didn't remain their original wood color, they weathered to a warm brown. Charlie Duckworth's suggestion is really good. Jerry Michels |

Campbell Scale Models still makes HO scale real wood barrels. with raised segments for barrel hoops (paint the hoops, leave staves and tops & bottoms unpainted).
Look for item #250 - 12 per packet.

I was hoping to find something a little larger... :-D (Attached photo of an early SP wine tank car) On 6/8/2022 2:30 PM, Kenneth Montero wrote:

Here are some photos of wood barrels used as containers for food and drink. The barrels are not stained or painted, but note the various staves have variation in color, so a simple stain job will not duplicate the look.
