Grab Iron On SFRD 7918
Grab Iron On SFRD 7918 Photo from Karl Sollmann on the Facebook Freight Car Photos group. Looks to me like this is the way the grab iron was attached rather than damaged. This is a great relief to folks who haven’t quite mastered attaching grad irons to models. Bob Chaparro Hemet, CA |

I dunno, Bob - the attach points of the brackets on the upper grab are in line, but it appears the "hat" section of the left bracket has been bent upwards.

Yes.
Someone else pointed out that the standoff bracket is very slightly bent upward so that might account for the crooked grab iron. Bob Chaparro Hemet, CA |

This grab iron thread has been going on for quite a while. But I have never seen a mention of a super grab iron tool at Micro Mark that has made the many grab irons I have had to make for my scratch built HO and O-scale cars: #84745 Grab Iron Bending Gauge
I have attached a picture of it. Enjoy!!

Bill,
I have this tool and I have to admit that I struggle to make it work. The steps are not in any particularly useful HO scale dimension so I am always having to figure out which step to use. I find it easier to just use needle nose pliers, but ymmv.

Bruce

My problem as well. I have considered chucking it in the vice and filing down some areas specifically for often used sizes. Just have not gotten “a round tuit.”

Thanks for your candor before I spend my money. I wonder if the sizes they offer are even fractions of an inch, which would work better in O or S scale than in HO.

Looking at the photo they are decimal inches on the right edge, metric on the left, and the decimal inches decrease in .05" increments. Example: a 16" grab is .184" long in HO, but the available increments are .150 or .200. Dennis Storzek |

Same concept but increments of 1/20 inch rather than 1/32. Not even useful for O or S scale, nor model aircraft at 1/72 or 1/144. Alex Schneider |

I posted this at the end of June, but here it is again. A grab iron bending jig that is (a) functionally free, and (b) infinitely adjustable to any desired width.

This is one of the big reasons I like this io group: quick and informative responses to a submission.
I want to thank Bruce, Steve, Dennis, Alexander, and Dave for replying to my Grab Iron submittal.
Maybe I’m not picky enough on actual grab iron size but I did find a tool increment whose size appeared to align with HO and later a O-scale size. But a couple of responses noted it was not quite the correct size.
I also had to insert the wide flat end to put the “U” into and then bend with pliers to get those funny bends for the realistic grab iron shape.
The reason I like having a tool is consistency in size and shape for scratchbuilding a car part. The Micro Mark tool appeared to do that for me.
Dave Parker, the tool that you mentioned in your note didn’t appear on my email. I am interested in seeing it as I might use it going forward.
Thanks to all,
Bill

Individual email providers can be erratic about conveying images posted to this group, especially given the different options the sender has (email vs grouips io Messages; attached vs embedded). If I am unsure about whether I have received an image, I always check the groups io Messages, because any sent image should always be there. I sent the photo of my bending jig in message 194280, and you should be able to find it there embedded within the message. If not, let me know. -- Dave Parker Swall Meadows, CA |
