The RPC article in Volume 30 at page 95 includes a photo of the top of the CB&Q covered hoppers built in 1940, came with flat welded roofs, just like the InterMountain model of those cars. Later production, including the FW&D cars came with Murphy flat panel roofs as seen in the top view photo at page 98. Though that picture is of a post-war version that all had the Murphy flat panel roofs.

Intermountain painted them black but used the wrong roofs, which is more difficult to fix. Amarillo cared enough to supply them with the correct roofs. Easier to paint them black should one desire to do so.

Those cars also came with the wrong roof. Most of that run with the type 3 hatches and latches had the incorrect flat panel roof instead of the Murphy standing seam roof. The only correct Q (or subsidiary) cars I am aware of are the FW&D cars from Amarillo and the Q Connection cars in the grey scheme. Eric Mumper |

Just to chime in on these cars. We worked closely with the BRHS and InterMountain, and the consensus was to have them in the all-mineral red scheme. If they originally had black roofs and bottoms, it didn't last too long. We queried this list before the project, but didn't receive any information. That's not a jab. But we tried our best to get things right for customers.

Nothing like sending without proof reading. Try this: If it is desired to have a black roof and hopper bottoms, the painting is not hard. It is even easier if the car is put in the freezer and the top popped off (remember to pry the running board end braces away from the ends first). A little masking tape and some Silly Putty around the difficult parts will mask the hopper bottoms right up for painting. Eric Mumper |

No can do on nailing down the paint scheme on these cars. Al Hoffman is the source of the cars having black roofs and hopper bottoms in the RP Cyc 30 article. It would be nice if there was more than one color picture of these cars in original paint. The official position of the BRHS seems to be all red cars and that appears to be based on trying to suss out colors in black and white images and first hand accounts from the 60s seeing these cars in service - which is why I assume they were repainted all mineral red when they were shopped. If it is desired to have a black roof and hopper bottoms, the painting is not hard. Other way around. They came out of the shop with black car cement. The color picture on p99 of RP Cyc 30 is in original paint and clearly shows a black roof and black hopper bottoms. Eric Mumper |

The only color picture in original paint of these cars that I am aware of is in RP Cyc 30 on p99. Better pictures of the later red post 1958 paint scheme are in there and Burlington Bulletin 20. The assumption is the Q did not suddenly start painting the roofs and hopper bottoms black in 1958 and had been painting the mineral red cars that way for a while. This only applies to the original paint out of the shop. Later repaints may have ended up all mineral red. Eric Mumper |

I have 2 of these covered hoppers and they will need some touch-up when I am done. The color is almost identical to the custom run of old Eastern Car Works cars I had done almost 30 years ago. Try Modelflex 16-14 light tuscan oxide red. Eric Mumper |

I’ve airbrushed TruColor’s Black and it covers well but I’m going to use Vallejo’s acrylic black as it leaves no brush marks to avoid masking. I assume the hatches were also black as part of the roof?
