The long kingpins were actually a safety measure... which obviously didn't work all the time. Normally the truck pivots on a 12" diameter center plate, as can be seen on the far bolster; the near one has broken off. This center plate, which also supports the weight of the car, only has 1" of engagement, so the long kingpin is supposed to keep everything in place if the truck tips while derailing, but apparently these didn't.

Yes, these are refrigerator cars on the New Haven. Some of these got transferred to Fruit Growers after New Haven signed oon
