Sunshine long 8k dome is too small?
I’ll check with Frank Hodina about this detail.

The new RCW 8k X-3 kit seems to have the same description as the 6.5k X-3 kit; one of the issues with the Sunshine 6.5k tank was the the dome was too small.
Was the Sunshine 8k dome too small as well?

It's not that simple. The Sunshine tank pattern was a shortened InterMountain 8K tank shell but the recess where the dome sits was unchanged. Attached is a photo of Franks 6.5K pattern (ignore the dust - I just grabbed it off the shelf) and he filled in the recess, made a new dome & riveted saddle, and the upper shell is a one piece casting. No separate dome like the Sunshine kit. Of the four Sunshine X-3 versions (10K, long 8K, stubby 8K, 6.5K), the 6.5K was the biggest seller. And it still seems to fetch the highest prices on the secondary market.Frank,
Any chance you would be able to supply castings of the correct size dome for the 6.5k car to those of us you still have unbuilt Sunshine 6.5k kits? Never hurts to ask I guess.

Frank I too would love to have the correct size done if they become availableFentonOn Aug 8, 2022, at 11:15 AM, Tom Madden via groups.io <pullmanboss=yahoo.com@groups.io> wrote:On Mon, Aug 8, 2022 at 08:25 AM, Ken Roth wrote:

The differences between the 6500 and 8000 gallon X-3's are the capacity, the length and dome size. The 6.5k has a 48" dome while the 8K is 54". The issue with the old Sunshine 6.5K car was that the dome was too large. The pattern was done though before plans were available.

Oh those pesky decimal places!! 😉 A handy rule of thumb is that one real inch is approximately 0.01” in HO (it is actually 0.01148”).

Math is wrong. It's 0.069", more than 1/16".

Decimal place matters. The rounded off number was good if that’s any consolation.

That was sort of my point. We make compromises in scale dimensions in other freight car details; mainly because the correct components aren't available, or can't be economically made, to scale.
But I admit that in this case, over 1/16'' would be visible. Sans the correct part though, I'd probably live with it, versus scratchbuilding a new dome.
