Hi all,
I am building an F&C kit 6560 SP A50-6. No information about the prototype in the kit. I looked to see if I could find these cars in my 7/50 ORER. It was not obvious if they are there. So my questions: Were these running in 7/50? Did some have K brakes (provided with the kit)? What were the series of numbers for the cars? TIA for any assistance. Regards, Tom |

The following info is from Thompson, "SP Freight Cars vol 3", pp51-79.
(1) Of the original 2000, 1095 were running in 1950. The numbers in the book, Table 4-3, match those in the 7/50 ORER. (2) Only four cars remained in 1955. Since K brakes were outlawed effective '53, I suspect the cars were retired rather than refit them with AB brakes. In answer to your question, I'm guessing but I would bet "yes". I enjoyed building one of these kits a few years ago. I built it for the original as-built appearance as I model 1926. I also used a Protocraft decal set that is top notch.

This car definitely lasted into the 50's- I have (somewhere) a good drawing of thss car which I will forward.. I don't think that I have ever seen a photo of this car without K brakes. Excellent decals were done by Ted Culotta (Now from the guy in Canada) and Protocraft. Ted also covered rhe car in one of his Essential Freight Car articles. A number of the A-50-6 box cars (as well as some 40 foot single sheathed cars) were converted into "hog fuel" cars (without roofs) in the 1950's. In 1959 there were still 222 of these cars listed as AAR type LP in the ORER. There were several design variations.
