Galvanized roof paint failure

Nelson Moyer

Thanks, Eric. That’s exactly the yard look I aspire to. My daughter visited us recently, and commented that all my boxcars were brown, as if she was disappointed that they didn’t look colorful like the seventies. I reminded her the I modeled 1953, and most boxcars were brown back then, then told her that eventually, they would have various weathering treatments to make each car individual in appearance, just like this photo.

I find some of the Delano images need an exposure adjustment to lighten the tone. Attached is the same image Rob shared but with the exposure adjustment. I use this image in a weathering presentation to illustrate the variations among prototype cars. Some roofs show paint failure, some seem to only have painted seam caps, a couple are a light grey or silver paint overall, and quite a few are wood.

Then there are the variations in lettering tone due to grime and dust accumulation, paint appearances on wood compared to steel sheathing, and the car color difference between two box cars of the same railroad.

The overall point it that everything has some degree of weathering. Everything.

Here’s another Delano photo with multiple roof surfaces.  Some snow too, so you have to squint carefully before accepting that a given tone on a roof is galvanized metal or something else.  But the Milwaukee road appears to have not painted roofs on a lot of cars. (I think the seam caps are painted.)

whoops meant ’the galvanized roof panel lapping down over the car end’.

I’m not sure if that is sulphur on the top of the roof, but in any event the what is clear is the galvanized car end lapping down over the car end is no longer carrying paint.

A cool detail for weathering . . .

Attached is an edit of another Jack Delano photo that shows paint failure on a coupe box car roofs. While the paint failure areas seem like the same shade of gray from a distance, there are hints of grime and soot when you zoom in closer.

And check out that yellow M-K-T box car. The roof doesn't even seem like it was painted.

Charlie,

I think your observations about galvanized roofing being a consistent color on a particular car.  That's what I have observed when researching weathering for some of my models.  I have used one color for the galvanized patches, and that has looked realistic.
