I think that you might have meant that some of the cars lacked dome platforms on the side pictured. They all appear to have running boards.

This one shows one of the early 10000 gallon X-3 cars in the immediate foreground with no numbers visible.  These cars are not the model coming soon from Rapido, they are earlier versions with cast bolsters as witnessed by the four rivet pattern on the side sill.
