Rapido USRA Wabash boxcar

I wanted this RTR car to look before the railroad rebuilt them into all steel cars.  Side boards picked out with various pencils and roof painted with oils.

That’s a great model I really like the weathering and the roof.

I noticed that Rapido failed to have the top horizontal board added to the DS sides when I was doing the side weathering.  They should (hopefully) have had a couple SME vet their USRA SS model and the upcoming SP SS boxcar to avoid these errors.   Accurail’s USRA DS is just as good after replacing the molded on handholds with wire ones.

Published builders photos of the USRA DS cars show they were built without a fascia; the 'starter strip' that the roof panels hook on was nailed directly to the car siding. I found that later photos, however, show the cars having a fascia. I've never been able to determine if this was a design change during production or something changed later by the owning roads.

Thanks for the clarification; USRA builder’s photo of a ATSF car shows the fascia board wasn’t applied but the Wabash cars built by Lenoir in 1919 did have it.  I think I’ll add a piece of Evergreen to my Wabash car as it just looks odd without it

Charlie,
Since the Wabash car in the photo has AB brakes, the photo dates to at least the WWII era, so it is possible that the fascia was added, either when the car was re-roofed, or the first time the siding needed renewal. Since more people model WWII than the 'Great War' era, I chose to include it, but there are certainly enough early photos that show it lacking.

A good 1940's view of the Wabash USRA DS car from the LIFE collection. This one has KC brakes.

Westerfield had 'modernized' USRA DS models -- I think one was Wabash. How were these different from the
original cars other than the AB brakes ?

Note to Charlie:
The 'starter strip' that the roof sheets hook onto bends over the corner and shows as a second line on the fascia. This isn't very thick, .002" or so in HO, but it is galvanized metal rather than wood.
