GN Doors
Bill,
Yes, this is for the Intermountain 12 panel 10’ IH kits. The cars built in 1948 and 1949 had the grab irons with a bracket on the left side and a drop grab on the right. The 1000 cars built in 1951 had brackets on both ends of the grab iron.
Previously there were lists showing which brands of hand brakes and running boards were used on each lot of cars. By going through the AFE files and various GN drawings I was able to determine which numbers had which hand brake and running boards. This table was initially published in the GNRHS Modelers’ Pages in December 2021. While writing part 2 of the article I discovered that there were also two different styles of coupler cut levers used, and recently updated this table.
The lower door guide on the Intermountain cars is the proper length for cars with Superior doors. It needs to be lengthened for cars equipped with Youngstown doors.
One thing that stands out on these cars is the Universal Rotary Slack Adjuster. You will see the lettering “ADJUST SLACK HERE” above an arrow pointing down on one side of these cars, but usually there is nothing there. This is where part of the rotary slack adjuster mounts. Note that this lettering should only be on one side of the cars where the slack adjuster is located.
By the way, the earlier cars that used Universal Hand Brakes used the malleable iron wheel with the slots near the center, while later versions used the stamped steel wheel now available from Tangent.
I don’t know what differences the SP cars had, as my focus has been the GN version.
Sincerely,
Rich Remiarz

Going by Rich and Ryans description of this mini kit I too am quite excited. I’m guessing that the car that this kit goes with is the Intermountain GN car with 12 panels in the 18000 series. Am I correct?
This car also featured unique hand grabs with the hat bracket on one end and standard mounting on the other.
This GN kit was also issued as a kit by both Speedwitch and Andy Carlson for the Southern Pacific B-50=25 boxcar. This kit also featured replacement doors, ends and roof. The Speedwittch instructions
were very complete noting the various handbrakes used on this class of car. There was a disclaimer, however, that stated that some small details for the SP car could not be duplicated as the car body was
for the Great Northern car. Just what details were not specified. Does anyone have a clue on this?

I am very excited about Ryan’s mini-kit. I wrote a two-part article on these boxcars that was published in the December 2021 and March 2022 GNRHS Modelers’ Pages. These became the second most common boxcar design on the GN.
There were many variations in these cars, including 2 types of ends, 5 different hand brakes, 4 different running boards, 2 styles of side grab irons, 2 styles of doors, 2 styles of coupler lift bars, and 2 different internal heights (and CUFT). Among other things, to make accurate models of these cars requires modifying the ends on the kit (as-is they do not accurately represent either of the prototype ends used), scratch building a rotary slack adjuster, and using three different decal sets to get the proper lettering (along with piecing some of the data and dates digit by digit).
Ryan’s mini-kit addresses all three of these, with the proper welded IDE-2 end, castings for the rotary slack adjuster, and proper decals for the car, including decals for both 10’ and 10’2” IH cars. In addition, Ryan includes the proper tack boards for the cars.
I hope that these kits are successful so that Ryan creates a second version for the cars with the IDE-1 ends in the future.

P.S. It is easy to get two part articles published when you are the editor of the publication. I am always looking for more modeling articles on GN equipment. You do not need to be a GNRHS member to submit an article.

Hi Brian:
Didn't expect to contact you so soon. Great information on the GN mini kit, however having purchased several of their mini kits all you really get are doors, decals and plastic strips for tracks. I would hope the kit has the proper doors.
I will say that National Scale Csrs service is great. I purchased a kit for what I thought was a 1932 MP boxcar. The doors were too tall and on contacting them I learned that they had two MP kits. They dent me the correct doors.

Last Saturday National Scale Car announced their newest mini-kits, Great Northern and SP&S 12 panel 40' boxcars. As mini-kits, the buyer must provide an InterMountain plastic box car kit and maybe other parts, including appropriate doors. Southwest Scale Productions offers both doors.
On Tuesday I talked to the owner, Dan Hall, who said his website is out of date. His Youngstown 4-6-6 door, FC-612 is in stock as well as an unadvertised, not yet listed on the website, 7 panel Superior door with thin top panel, #671. These can both be used on the Great Northern mini-kit.
I thought this might be of interest to some members on this list.

Thanks for the kudos on National Scale Car service. A quick note though, the MK102 series Door replacement mini kits also include the etched Union Duplex door track etchings, the styrene strip is provided to make the standoffs for these, not to make door tracks themselves.
Regarding the GN and SP&S 12 panel kits.
A revised version of the kit instructions will be posted on the website shortly, that identifies the Southwest Scale productions #671 Superior Door. I did not know these existed until Brian Leppert and Rich Remiarz informed me about them as they are not listed on Southwest Scale Productions website. The instructions will also have an additional step/photo that I missed in the initial revision.
Regarding including the doors in these kits. Out of principle of supporting small niche manufactures such as myself, I thought it best not to make my own version of these doors to include in the kits. Dan from Southwest Scale Productions provides some great parts to our modelling community and his doors are excellent. I hope you will support him and purchase the correct doors for your kit. While your there, check out his other great offerings, you might find something else you could use.
If the doors weren't already made by Dan, or up to the prototype quality I would want in my own model, I would have design my own and included them in the kit.
Thank for your understanding and support.
Ryan
Weird. The #671 doors were introduced ages ago. I think they are correct for some of the postwar SP 10-0 box cars.
