.....we were returning from a cruise to Door County and were in a very dense fog on our sailboat Aeolus (named and lettered for the CB&Q streamlined Hudsons). The for was so thick we couldn't see the bow of our 26' boat. It was before GPS was affordable and we were following the depth lines to navigate along the shoreline. A very loud ship's foghorn sounded and we got on the radio and tried to hail the car ferry (we were north of Manitowoc) and they never acknowledged us even though they no doubt had us on radar and heard our transmission. This was not long after I had read the novel "Shipkiller" and when we finally got into port we lit some candles at the church there!
