Industry appropriate cars

Dave Wetterstroem

I model the C&O towns of Prince, Quinnimont and the Piney Creek Subdivision (branchline) between Prince and Raleigh WV.  This area is predominantly known for it's coal mining, but there were a large number of non-coal related industries that served by the C&O. I have a copy of the 1950 Industrial Directory that the railroad put out. From this, I have created as spreadsheet of all the non-coal related business that would have been served either from this branchline or from other branchlines that fingered out from the yard at Raleigh. While I am not modeling these industries or the branches that finger out from the yard at Raleigh, every car serving those businesses would have had to have passed along the section that I am modeling.

What I could use help with is figuring out what car types and or specific models that would be appropriate to serve these industries?

IE, there are a number of bottling plants including Coca~Cola, Seven-Up, Royal Crown and Dr Pepper. I would assume that they would be receiving glass bottles as well as syrup to make the soda-pop from but in what kind of cars? There are also a number or beer distributors on the list. I am assuming that the billboard reefers are gone by the early 50's, but my guess is that they still would have required insulated cars.

Thanks

As far as a possible glass bottle source, the Owens bottle plant in Fairmont, WV, was the largest Coke bottle manufacturer in the US until it closed in 1971. They probably made bottles for those off brands, too.

Thanks for this info.  Would be really helpful for any model railroader to have this sort of data for their area and time frame.

However, there is this entry:

Why is an ice and bottling works getting Explosives, Flour, Feed, Seed & Hay

It could be a general store. Have you Googled Pemberton, WV for a historical summary or census data? Small towns often had fuel, ice, grain, and hardware under one vendor name.

This link is for the Sanborn Maps for page 15 of Beckly from 1922.  It is likely this is the most recent map for this location.  Page 15 is the most interesting of the set. https://www.loc.gov/resource/g3894bm.g3894bm_g093861922/?sp=14&st=image&r=-0.133,0.353,1.048,0.572,0

The other pages of interest are 7, 12, 13, and maybe 14 (I don’t recall).

Hello,
My business, rails unlimited, has about 20 different shippers guides, from various railroads all over the country that list industries. My website is railsunlimited.ribbonrail.com.
The newest shippers guide is from the Illinois Terminal railroad and has not made the website yet.
These shippers guides can be used for making prototype way bills and for historical research.
Please contact me off list at: railsunlimited 2@...

Last night I asked John Young, who worked for Pepsi for 30+ years, about how the bottling plants handled materials.

He said that in the 1950s, only Coca-Cola was shipping pre-mixed syrup to its bottling plants. They shipped in tank cars to any of their plants that could accept them.

Every other brand received drums and sacks of components to mix with (real) sugar that each plant would source on its own. Depending on location and brand, a plant could use any of a number of types of sugar - cane, beet, etc, but when locally-sourced it usually didn't arrive by rail. When the other ingredients were shipped by rail, the ingredients would arrive in box cars.

Bottles would be shipped by rail, and while Owens' Fairmont glass plant was big, they also shipped bottles out of Toledo, Ohio.

- Fritz Milhaupt

Dave Wetterstroem

Fritz, that is some great information. The Coca-Cola bottling plant in Beckley, didn't have a siding and is marked that it used the team track.
So by the 50's, I don't know how much rail traffic they would see. I can't imagine that they would want to make a regular habit of moving bottles or other ingredients from the team track to the bottling plant. I could be wrong about that though.

I am also wondering at what point a bottling plant started producing multiple brands. There is Coke, 7-Up & Royal Crown bottling plants listed for Beckley. Now I know that Coke and RC are competitors, so those obviously wouldn't be in the same plant.

Jack Mullen

A friend of an uncle owned a small bottling plant which I visited a few times in the late '50s-early '60s. I was pre-teen so don't remember in much detail but can offer a few points.
This was a small operation that received everything by truck, and delivered likewise. I recall they used bagged sugar. Flavorings came in liquid form as far as I can recall.
I seem to remember a considerable number of CO2 containers. All the above could potentially be delivered by rail if the size of the business was greater, or maybe in an area with poor roads. Glass bottles were used packed in wooden cases or cardboard six packs. Crown caps would be another consumable.
As I recall there was a house brand with a few flavors and they also bottled some other brands, none of the majors.
