Pagnoni Presses, was Question about 40 ft. gondolas

OK, Richard, no offence taken, but now you've piqued my interest.  What sort of hydraulic press is that piece from?  Have you got a picture of the entire machine?

I'm sure others are curious also.

The whole press is shown in photo 2. Fratelli Pagnoni (now known as Pagnoni Impianti) made a variety of presses. They started out making small presses for the wine and olive oil businesses like those in photo 4. Their expertise got them into bigger and bigger presses including the one in photo 3. They now make huge presses for the wood products industry.

I have some wonderful friends in Italy who are members of the Pagnoni family. I want to have a link to them on my model railroad, and I thought a load of presses would be a good way of doing that. My original thought was to have some wine presses (like photo 4) but they are too small to be an open car load. So I decided to go with a bigger press like in the original photo, but scaled up a bit to be more likely to be handled as an open car load.

Interesting, and very cool that you have a personal connection.

Thanks Richard!

Okay me of the best modelers I know is John Paganoni. I’m going to show this to him - I’m sure he’ll get a kick out if it.

I started working on a 3D design for the "Paganoni Press" flat car load today for Richard. When I get the parts to fix my printer, I could print one for your friend Marty.

Yes, spelling is different, but I’d bet the families are intertwined somehow.
Not at all unusual, especially when our ancestors came into the US.
And I’m sure John would get a kick out of it!

Marty,

I agree. John Pagnoni is one of the best modelers I have ever met. In fact he has been one of the Judges on at least 2 of my Cars.

He will get a kick out of this. Also being a genealogy club guy, I wouldn’t be surprised if this name might be hos from an ancestor.

I finally got parts to repair my printer. It sure takes a long time to ship parts from China.

Anyway...Yesterday I was able to 3D print the "Pagnoni Press" flat car load. I tilted it at 45 degrees so the curved top would be smooth.

That meant that I had to add a lot of supports to one side. When I removed them they created some "divots" that will need to be filled with Tamiya white putty.

Here's some photos of the results.

very impressive ! how much did you have to invest in a 3-D printer to get that kind of quality, if I may ask ?

Tim

I bought an Elegoo Saturn for about $500 in late June 2021. It's now selling for $304 on Amazon. Elegoo released the Saturn 2 with an 8K screen vs. 4K, higher resolution and larger build area which now is selling for $570 on Amazon. It was Black Friday priced at $509. I'll probably upgrade sometime next year.

I just started another print of the press that uses smaller supports in the area that had divots. Hopefully I can remove the supports without taking divots this time.

I was able to remove the smaller supports without the divots! Why didn't I use smaller supports the first time?
