Thanks Nelson, Steve and Allen (and Norm offline), I have everything I need now. I appreciate your help. The drawings took some study and the photos helped, and now I what to do. I took about an hour last night and made some good progress.
I'll post more when it's done. |

John - the class ICC 103 is what the car is designed to carry and is an ARA Class II and III, ICC (now DOT) designation, usually interior lining and various outlets, vents and pressure limitations. ICC 103 designated this class as a general purpose tank car and specifies its range of contents - the Type 27 refers to the design of the car - in this case AC&F’s 1927 design, usually the underframe, etc - a tank was a tank and pretty much lasted for ever. GATX had their own type designation. Remember in 1927-1935, the Type 27’s were built with Type KD or KC brake systems. These were required to be replaced by AB brake systems on or before 1953. So what you are modeling is a tank car with an AB brake replacement. It was normally done at the tank car owner’s shops or subbed out to another facility. There was no standard for this and so you will find some with the actuating piston and/or reservoir on one side or on the same side at the AB valve - Most had the AB valve mounted on top of the reservoir so it ended up above the running board - but not always. You can probably get away with anything and be almost correct - in-service photos are always the best solution and then no one can ‘outsmart you”

For the record the Red Caboose car is ICC 103W which is different than the Type 27 and thus the brake gear arrangement is different. On my model the valve is on top of the reservoir, and the cylinder is on the same side of the frame. ON the Ype 103 the valve and cylinder are on the same side of the frame and the reservoir is on opposite sides of the frame. Danke! John Golden O'Fallon, IL |

Take a look at

from the RCW site is an AB brake drawing from ACF from the retired kits info.

Hi Gents,
I'm building an O scale Intermountain Type 27 tank car and am in need of an AB brake gear diagram or some good pictures of AB brake gear installations. Does anybody have anything you can share? Thanks! John Golden O'Fallon, IL 62269 |
