Question about AAR 40 ft. gondolas

Victor,

Accurail makes a nice plastic model of the AAR 40ft gondola, and somewhere is a description of which RRs owned those cars.  You might check the Accurail website or search in this list in the Groups.io site.  D&RGW was one owner, and IIRC, the others were Southern or Midwestern RRs.

Others may provide real links to the thread about the AAR 40' gons.

There is no single "AAR" gondola because the interior heights, choices of floors, and the choice of ends varied from owner to owner.
The Accurail model is not accurate for the D&RGW cars, nor for NP cars, for example.

The ACL purchased two groups of these cars on the eve of WWII and the AAR subsequently made the design "Recommended Practice". The two groups differed only in the type of floor, wood vs. steel, but have different IH, because the wood floor is thicker. Subsequent groups built for other roads varied in details of tie downs, inside stake holders, and ends, the same as different groups of AAR boxcars differed.

Some years back, Mont Switzer wrote an article on what it takes to upgrade the Accurail gondola to be correct for the Nickel Plate.  As I recall, it didn't take much.  He added grabs and other finer details.
