Announcing the 2023 Shake-n-Take project

Brent Greer

We are pleased to announce the 2023 Shake-n-Take project to be presented at the Prototype Rails meet in Cocoa Beach this coming January.

The next project will be…   (drum roll please)

The Santa-Fe class Fe-26 40' double door Automobile Boxcar

This project was inspired by the last modeling clinic presented by Greg Martin at Prototype Rails, and part of the fun of this project is to make it a "Mont Switzer" type endeavor to preserve the factory paint (which is "practically perfect in every way...")

Based on the C&BT factory decorated HO car kits, we will have new correct doors and side sills in resin and upgraded detail parts for ladders, running boards, etc.

As with last year, due to costs incurred, we will be asking for a $15 donation (cash or check made to Brent Greer) to be brought to the Horizon Room at the hotel on Saturday, January 7 at 4:00 PM.  (Note: N
o one will be denied participation due to an inability to contribute.)

To sign up to participate, please send an email to me, drbrentgreer@... to get on the master list. (Please do not reply to the whole group.)

We will have a total of 35 kits for distribution at the event.  The first 25 slots will go to those who are first to email me with their interest.  Any requests received beyond the first 25 will be placed on a waiting/alternate list.  We will also hold 10 slots for in-person sign up at the registration desk.

I hope you will enjoy this year's project and we look forward to seeing you at Prototype Rails 2023.

Sincerest Regards,
Brent

The car in this post is a builder’s photo of ATSF 64279. As such, cars in this class operated in general service for about a year before Evans auto racks were installed beginning in 1947.

Without the racks there is no stencil on the door indicating their presence. Some of these cars were assigned to auto parts service.

The narrow side sheets required a smaller than standard Santa Fe herald. The double-door arrangement required a special, slightly smaller map stencil with the word “Ship” omitted.

Lastly, on this car there is no dash between “Fe” and “26” on the class stencil. Most Santa Fe boxcar photos I have seen show the dash. But on some cars, it was not present.
