Why aren’t there reporting marks on the side?  The end uses white, which should be easily seen if on the sides.

Heinz lettered the company name and car number on the side sill. As built lettering in the 1920s would read:
H.J. HEINZ COMPANY  PICKLE TANK CAR  78
In later years the lettering may have been somewhat modified to insert the HJHX reporting mark.
In this photo the side sill is rusted, with badly weathered, deteriorated paint. Only ghosting of some letters is visible.
I can barely distinguish ICKL in the third panel, not much else legible.

Attached is an image of newly delivered HJHX 70 sitting in the Heinz factory courtyard.

Also attached is HJHX 77 found in the Lake State collection. This is estimated to be in the 1950s. The truss arrangement differs between the two cars.

Does anyone know how accurate the long-available Athearn blue box pickle car is to the Heinz variety? Who else had similar cars? Thanks.

Here are a few more pictures and a drawing which I have pulled off of the internet over the years.

I might add that AMB makes an open side conversion kit for use with Tichy flatcar kits.

Hirsch Brothers in Louisville KY had tub type pickle cars. They made the now defunct
Paramount Pickles brand. One of their cars was donated to the Kentucky Railway Museum.
After a life of hauling brine, it was heavily rusted. After a few years, the museum scrapped it.
I do not have a picture of it.

Bruce Hendricks asked how accurate are the Athearn blue box pickled cars.    In the research I have done the Athearn car with some work can produce a accurate Heinz pickle car.  The roof hatch supports the roof require the most work.   Here a are a couple of photos of two in service on my Minneapolis & Northland Railroad Company at a collection and salting station.

Bob, Thank You for sharing this great color photo.   Provides a fine view of the “B” end  and one type of the hatch rests, clearly visible.

Yesterday I posted a drawing that was way too small to be of much use.

Here is a better one.
