Warren tankcar railing color

Nelson Moyer

On the other hand, if you have three of those Tangent cars, you can paint the ladders and handrails dark green, black, or leave them as the come from the factory. Or maybe leave the ladder factory painted and paint the handrail dark green, or even black. Who will know if you get it wrong?

Here’s the image of the prototype off Tangent’s web site showing dark hand railings. Car number is 242. The model I have is 249 and painted the railings black yesterday per feedback from Ed Hawkins.  These are great looking cars from Tangent no matter what color the railings are

I spent a bunch of time a few years back tracking Warren tank cars.  While I can’t be sure, I believe that the two cars in Doug’s photo had two different builders.  11769 was built by ACF in lot 4113 in 1953.  12654 could have been built by GATCC, but I can’t be 100% sure, among 64 cars within the range of 12304 and 12660.  That could be an example of a minor difference between builders that, apparently, wasn’t a big deal to Warren.  There are a couple of other examples in photos of GATCC built cars having the light colored handrails and ladders.

Charlie here is a color photo showing two Warren tank cars, not the same type as the Tangent car, one has dark (black or green) and one has white handrails. I also have b/w photos that show both dark and white handrails on other types of tankcars. And some photos show ladders as the same color and others with ladders a different color. I suspect Tangent got it right for the tankcar they offer, based on a photo. Unless you have a photo you can follow.

Certainly not a big deal but I was looking at my Tangent Warren tankcar and noticed the prototype images the railing is dark (black?) and the model has it as white.   Guess I’ll get the black paint out…

I’m not convinced the handrail is dark.

One of Charlie's photos (#242) shows a dark handrail with a white ladder...

The correllary to that is that if the ladder is body color, the hand rail would match the ladder.

It appears that the ladders are the same color as the handrails on these cars, so if you paint the hand rail, you need to paint the ladder as well.

Steve and Barb Hile

There are some photos of Warren tank cars that do show handrails that match the tank body color.  The ACF car builder’s photos do show black handrails, but there are others.  As always, if you can find a photo of your prototype, copy it!

Ed Hawkins contacted me off list and verified the railing should be black.

It is my opinion (ahem! clears throat) ... that, it depends.

I've attached 3 photos that appear to me to show black (2850), green (884), and aluminum (3080) handrails.

Well, there’s your authoritative answer. Thanks for sharing with use. I have three of those car, so I guess it’s time for me to break out my black paint.

I reckon the rail is a dark color, if it was in shade l am sure it would not be able to cast another shadow onto the tank so consistently.

Nelson Moyer

Charlie, I think you’re seeing shadow on the bottom of the handrail. The prototype ladder is light colored as is the tank, so I don’t think the handrail is really black. Look at the handrail on the end of WRNX 242, and that doesn’t look black to me. I’d hold off for more authoritative replies before braking out the black paint.
