Viking roof for Branchline AAR 1937 boxcar.

Dave Wetterstroem

I just picked up a Branchline Yardmaster 1937 AAR boxcar lettered for C&O #4444. My friend the late Paul Winters loved fun numbered cars & he photographed this car back in the day.

The car has nice lettering but it should have a Viking roof rather than the Murphy that is on this car.

Has anyone in the group put a Viking roof on a Branchline car? I have some IMWX cars with Viking roofs but don't know if that part will fit the Branchline car.

Thanks,
Dave

I put a Des Plaines Viking roof on an Intermountain box car worked great.

Thanks!

In the case of Intermountain, I think that roof would fit both the 10-0 AAR car body and their 10-6 AAR car body as well.
IRC's prewar 10-0 and 10-6 10-panel prewar bodies also have separate ends, so they are excellent kitbash material for many
roof and end variations.

Is there a reference compilation of Viking roof boxcars?

Quick scan of photos and notes - CNW, CMO, C&EI, C&O, D&H, D&TS (exNKP), ERIE, NKP (all the Van Sweringen roads),
NS (original Norfolk Southern), P&WV, PM, NP (second hand), SP, TP&W (second hand)

Viking also made earlier design roofs that don't look anything like the classic design from Des Plaines. Some of the cars were 50 feet
long and Tom Madden cast a bunch of 50 foot Viking roofs a long time ago for modeling the NKP car using the Proto 2000 kit.

Tim,

Thanks for this listing.  Could you provide any more information on the second hand NP cars with Viking roof?

In 1963, GN leased cars in the series GN 15000-15549.  They appear to have had Viking roofs (see attached photos).

They were "...formerly Erie-Lackawanna Series 78500-78999 and 79000-79199." (this from the GN diagram for the cars).  They are noted as being built in 1940.  I suspect the door widening happened after E-L ownership--A.A.Morrison Co. are listed as owners.

Note that trucks were listed as "Barber, Nat'l.B1 Cast Steel" (see attached photo).

Also note that the secondary door is wider than the main door.  Inside height is 10'.

The NP had a bunch of ex-ERIE AAR design box cars built in 1936=1937 rebuilt into combination door cars
for lumber (wide door) or grain (sliding door only). They retained their original ends (BUCKEYE) and roof (VIKING).
I think the rebuilder may have been Greenville Steel Car, if that is their logo on this car NP 37287.

Looks like the Greenville logo to me.  See the  http://www.trainweb.org/nwrp/bldr/bldr.html and attached

The GN car in the photo I submitted has what appears to be the same logo, on the sidesill.  On the GN diagram, the lessor is shown as A. A. Morrison Co.--owner but not rebuilder, apparently.

Yes, it looks like one of the versions. Greenville varied through the years.

The question is, WHERE did this car come from originally ? D&M 2600 to 2649 were 10-5 IH
double door XM's with 4/5 (prewar) ends -- possibly with S-corners (?) -- and a Viking roof !

The cars were acquired second hand via USRE (United States Railway Equipment) after 1959 but
before 1965.

I am mystified by these cars. :-)

RE: GN 15224
I noticed a stencil to the left of the door that reads: "End Lining Not Standard To Car."
Comments?

50" Viking roof would be either C&NW or one of the AMC roads. I would start with Pere Marquette.

This picture of a Viking roof is interesting.

I have seen model Viking roofs where there is a flat section between the corrugations and the roof 'cross members' (unsure if that is the correct term.)

But on this roof, the cross members look as though they sit on top of the actual corrugations.

I have seen an O scale model of an Erie car that depicted this. See attached, which comes from 'Gene's P48 Blog'. (Sorry I do not know the gentleman's name, he is probably on this group.)

So, I don't know if there is more than one style of this type of Viking roof.
