FYI Easy Chalk Marks

Eric Thur

All,

Just an FYI about a way to make nice looking chalk marks on your Freight Cars. I was running low on Sunshine chalk mark Decals and wanted to find a better way of marking my cars especially Tank cars which can be awkward to decal at times. At Hobby Lobby, I came across " Faber-Castell -Goldfaber" colored pencils. I purchased White and Yellow. They are fine point, write sharp with no skips or flaking. They work great on Dull Coat painted surfaces.  I tried rubbing them with a Q-Tip to get a rubbed-out image and it worked well.  So, if you are low on decals or tired of using all that Micro Sol to get those chalk mark decals to set down, try these pencils. Best of all, they are Made in Germany and are only $1.49 Each.

If the car has a light colored primer or is molded in a light colored material I have used a carbide scriber to write chalk marks.

I've had very good results with Prismacolor's Verithin artists' pencils. These come in several colors.
