Yes, and No. In other words, sometimes they did, sometimes they
used a new cylinder.

When freight cars were converted to AB brakes, was the existing brake cylinder reused, with the attached valve and reservoir removed?

That was an option as long as the existing "K" Brake Cylinder was a 10" model.
From American Railway Association Circular No. DV -- 819, September 10, 1934:
"It is reported by the manufacturers that the cost complete of a set of Type "K" brake equipment is $69.70, as compared with a price of $144.40 for a set of Type "AB" brake equipment.
There is available, however, a modification in this schedule, as cited above, whereby the car owner can continue the use of existing ten-inch brake cylinders and auxiliary reservoir when supplied with an additional cast iron supplementary reservoir in conjunction with a blanking plate for the auxiliary reservoir, and an "AB" valve to replace the present "K" triple valve; the cost of such an installation would then be $105.58."
