Chemical frameless 40' tankcars

George Courtney

Can I justify 40' Chemical frameless Tank cars in 1953 with no domes?  I'm looking for a common car not the exception, of course.  I'm in S scale but if there was an HO or N scale model to look at or a photo.

Thanks,
George Courtney

I’m not an expert here, but I think not. The kind of car you describe essentially was permitted beginning in 1957, including domeless and frameless tanks.

Rather than the term "frameless", I think a more accurate term is "stub sill". The tank of a stub sill car
performs the job of the center sill. The stub still at each end is for the bolster and draft gear.

Here is an early style stub still tank car from UTC in 1954-1956. I don't know when the first stub sill car
was built, unless it was this one? :-)

Note in Tim’s attachment that the car was DEVELOPED during 1954-56. This different construction was not approved until 1957.
