“While MTH markets this car as a "40' Steel Sided Reefer Car" and letters it as a class R-40-23 car, it is really a pretty good model of a plywood sided R-30/40-24 with a built-up underframe.”
Is there a problem with the roof on this car, also?

Per the chart on page 157 of Pacific Fruit Express Second Edition; R-40-24 numbered 65921-68532.  Scale Trains preorder signup lists car numbers 66123, 67046, 67412 being offered.

Subtracting the last 200 per Tony’s instruction above gives us a low car number of 68332 IF the cars were numbered in sequence as they were finished.  As Tony is one of the authors of the PFE book, maybe he can offer more info on this.

Ah ! Yes, I looked at some more photos and indeed two different roofs were applied to the R-40-24. So it
depends on the car number. Also, not all R-40-24's got plywood sides.

My photos agree with Bruce -- I have a shot of 68400 roof with DP roof.

Also 68245, 68428, and 68431 all have tongue in groove wood sheathing, rather than plywood.

I think some of these cars ran until the end of ice service.

I saw the new (to ScaleTrains.com) reefers at the Prototype Rails show last week and took the attached photo of them. Unfortunately, I was unaware of the roof question at the time so my photo is from the wrong angle for that.  You can see the underframe though.  The photo and renderings on the their website indicate a rectangular panel roof (see attached).

Tony Thompson and others on this list were also there so perhaps one of them took a look and can verify or revise.

It is not evident to me that this car has much to offer us unless ScaleTrains plans to substantially upgrade the details per their Rivet Counter Line.

I know some R-40-24 reefers had expanded metal running boards (Transco? Gypsum?) but the model appears
to have grid-style running boards (Apex et al). Just another factoid to be aware of. :-)

As I understand, these transition era freight cars although new to the Scale Trains line were cars previously made for Mike's Train House.

 

In the particular case of the PFE reefer, MTH had called it an R-40-23 and numbered it as such, I know, as I updated the one I got to change the car number.  Scale Trains can be commended for getting a better series of numbers on their versions.  I doubt that they will ever make "Rivet Counter" versions of these cars, however.

page 145 “The material specifications in the shop orders for rebuilding of the -24 class specify “Harborite” exterior plywood for car sides.  The old underframe, whether a 30-ton or 40-ton underframe, was reused, as on earlier rebuilds.”

Caption to diagram on page 146 “Ajax brake gear and Apex running board shown but others makes of specialties were also applied.”

page 148; ”After 1955, the plywood was no longer repaired, but instead the entire car side was re-sheathed with T&G siding.”  “The number of cars which received T&G replacement siding is not known,”

I guess the bottom line is if I buy one and later find photo verification that the makeup of that specific car is wrong, I’ll have to change the number to one that is correct or not worry about it.

Right! I forgot there were R-30-24's as well as R-40-24's. I have equal numbers of pictures of each and they
seemed to have lasted equally long.
