Mike Brock
Aley, Jeff A
It is with great sadness that I must tell you that Mike Brock, founder of the Steam-Era Freight Cars list, has passed away. I just found out this morning that he passed away on Monday, January 2, 2022. He was a great friend as well as a fine modeler. I am still in shock, but hope to be able to write more about him in the next day or two.
We just concluded Prototype Rails 2023 in Cocoa Beach (which he also founded), and nobody there had been informed that he had passed. But the convention went very well, so I’m sure he was with us in spirit.

R.I.P. Mike. I only got to speak with Mike once during my only attendance at Prototype Rails 2018. Mike made it a point to have a conversation with me to make me feel welcome even though he never met me before. Mike Redden On Sun, Jan 8, 2023 at 1:48 PM Aley, Jeff A <jaley@...> wrote:

I have always thought the best thing about my hobby is getting to meet and know really interesting and fun people. I am glad I got to meet and know Mike and I loved getting to visit his wonderful Sherman Hill model railroad! A quick search of my email archive shows almost 2,000 saved emails spanning 24 years (1997 to 2021). The last email I have from Mike was after Greg Martin passed away from Covid -- "Prototype Rails has lost one of its founders and I have lost a dear friend, Greg Martin. Greg was the Voice of Prototype Rails. More than that, of course, he was a key part of operation of the meet, handling the auction along with Mark Kerlick. He also was the power behind the Shake N' Take. Greg and I go back to the origins of Prototype Rails, many years ago. Like many, I watched Greg's fight, praying he would pull through. I will have trouble losing him. Condolences to his family." -- Mike Brock R.I.P. Mike On 1/8/2023 1:48 PM, Aley, Jeff A wrote:

I never had a chance to meet Mike; however, this list as well as Coca Beach RPM’s are achievements that in my book put him in the RPM Hall of Fame.

What a blow. Mike was a wonderful person and a friend. We met at the San Jose NMRA convention in 2000, and hit it off immediately. I have attended nearly all the Cocoa Beach meetings and enjoyed every one. I know I will miss him and I’m sure the same is true for many others.

Dang. Mike was a prince of a man and it was my great honor to meet him. He brought people together to share something they enjoy and helped many of us meet new friends and learn. That’s a fine legacy. Dave Owens West Hartford, CT_,_._,_ |

I was with Marty when he got the call. We were all shocked and saddened, to say the least.
On my very first visit to Cocoa Beach, Mike graciously invited me to his house during the day on Thursday to enjoy his layout. What a kind and generous gentleman, he will certainly be missed. CCB has become a regular stop on our schedule. My condolences to his family and friends.

Very sad to hear. I have a great appreciation of the work Mike and the other founders and volunteers brought to Cocoa Beach, but also in the moderation of this list over the years. I missed seeing his face at Cocoa Beach this year, and i’m also going to miss his occasional emails about moderator jail! Prayers and condolences for and to his family and many friends. Mike's Sherman Hill layout has always been an inspiration for me. I live in Northern Colorado and have driven between Cheyenne and Laramie countless times and have always been impressed with how accurately he captured the look and feel of Sherman Hill. I still have the issue of his layout in Model Railroad Planning. Sadly, I never had the chance to meet him in person

A generous man with his time and wisdom with a good sense of humor and an uncanny for attracting chocolate chip cookies at CCB. He helped me with my first battles with stiles and earned by gratitude. His modeling was superb and he shared his knowledge with us all. A life well lived in all aspects. My condolences to his family. We have all lost a treasure.
