Erie Straight-Sill gon kitbash?

Was there ever a straight-sill Erie gon that resembled the Athearn 50' mill gon? I purchased what was claimed to be an Erie gon kitbash, but it turns out the 14500 series had fishbelly side sills.

The Athearn gondola is not a prototype of anything, but the Erie did have some 48 foot straight side gondolas
with fishbelly center sills -- This one (ERIE 15850) had drop ends. It's a 1960 photo so I think it is a renumbered
car from series 14000 to 14499. Most Erie gondolas seem to have drop ends in 1950.

The weird structure in ERIE 15850 is actually part of the car -- It is used for handling specific
types of export crates. Also, the ends must have been welded shut because the car is listed as
having solid ends in this configuration. There were 100 cars in this series, all so equipped ! I wonder
if anyone out there ever took a photo of a loaded car. :-)

The cars were operated like this for years!

In the June 1986 MR there was a "Paint Shop" article by Bill Mischler on making an Erie 14000-14499 series gondola from the Athearn 50' gon. Bill notes that the kitbash (cut off the fishbellies from the sides and trim the crossbearers) "doesn't duplicate the real car exactly" and that certainly is true, but it makes a decent stand-in.

You guys obviously have forgotten Richard Hendrickson’s kitbashes of the Athearn gondola, reported in a two-part article in Prototype Modeler magazine (“Mill gondolas and how to model them,” Part 2, Vol. 5, No. 8, November-December 1982, pages 12–16; Part 1 was in the preceding issue, September-October 1982). These show a neat version of the Erie gondola.

I didn't forget, but I only have part 2. The Erie car is in part 1, apparently. Wish I could get a copy of part 1. ;)

I wish PM were in the public domain ! It was before my time. I've only snagged a few copies.

At the Heritage Discovery Center in Buffalo where I do volunteer work there are dozens of old magazines like Prototype Modeler, Model Railroading, Rail Model Journal, etc.  Mags are not completely sorted yet though.  It's on my list of things to do.  We could use volunteer help on such projects.

Below is a picture and a diagram of the similar straight side gon. End is different, one less rib....

The gon in the builders photo/diagram is similar to Westerfield's kit 7100 which is for a CN car.

The Erie & CN cars both have 12 ribs with approximately the same dimensions. RDG/USRA steel gons (Walthers & Westerfield kits) have 12 ribs too & the inner height is the same but are a few feet shorter, around 1/3 inch in HO.
