Broadway Limited 6, 000 Gallon Tank Cars/ Walthers newly-announced tank cars - same prototype?

Tim,

What's your issue with the BLI underframe? I'm holding one in my hand from the previous run as I type this and it sure looks like an AC&F underframe to me.

The illustrations do not show an ACF underframe. It looks like Walthers applied a new tank body to their
truly ancient el cheapo 8k tank car (ex Varney?) . That frame has no prototype as far as I know and the one
shown in their illustration looks rather odd too.

The EBAX car from Walthers is the correct size and lettering for those cars, but the frame? Urf.

The Broadway cars also appear to have a fantasy frame. :-(

Oh well.

Speaking of tank cars, I recently lined up several (well, 8) TANGENT tank cars and examined them. The DETAILS
differ from car to car, even of the same general design. The domes are different, the walkways are different, the outlets
are different. TANGENT really goes the extra distance!! It makes other plastic tank car models look ridiculous.

Gents,

Broadway Limited has announced a new round of 6,000 gallon ACF tank cars in HO. There are some new schemes and some reruns. This time they are selling them as 2-packs, often with two different schemes on the two cars. To see both schemes in a 2-pack, you have to click on the artwork, then go through the 4 images in the pop-up window.

Tim,

Well, first artwork has never been an appropriate way to judge any model (just look at all of Walther's art), second, the BLI artwork actually looks pretty accurate (so I'm not sure what you are on about), and third, why would you look at art when they have already released the car and you can look at the real thing?

The Walthers tank can't be the same prototype as the BLI because it has 6 radial tank jacket sections unlike the BLI, which has none.

I've not cross-referenced the drawings to any tank car photos yet, but tbh I hope the Walthers is a GATC prototype. GATC made some cars that were analogous to ACF cars (including a 6k gallon "chemical" tank similar to the BLI AC&F model) which I have never seen models of.

Phil, Folks,

The Walthers art shows 5 radial sections (not 6 😉).

The old Walthers frame is an "approximation" of a GATC frame, although certainly nothing approaching the most recent releases (Tangent) for accuracy.

If we are reading into the Walthers announcement, it sounds like only the tank is new, and thus one has to wonder why they would do that? (That's a rhetorical question, in case anyone was tempted to answer ad nauseum).

No pics. Just artwork so far with a Mix of ACF and GATC lettering details. I suspect like most recent Walthers steam era rolling stock these will be poorly done but waiting to see.

For my two cents, it certainly appears that Walthers has created what is now a third tank body for its generic underframe.  They also refer to their 3 compartment car as 36'.

The "original" was the single compartment

Then came the 3 compartment

And now, we will have the "chemical" tank version.

I noticed that only the undecorated version artwork shows the brake cylinder side of the car.

I do wish that they had expended some effort on the underframe.  The new tank may well be useful.

FWIW,

Chris,

As Brian notes, no photos. Frankly, I doubt that a physical plastic shot from the new mold even exits at this time. Walthers has been bumping up their sales releases until they are occurring before the molds are even cut.

There are photos of the new Walthers car here (thanks to a member of ARF):

https://www.walthers.com/36-insulated-chemical-tankcar-ready-to-run-vulcan-chemical-gatx-33789

The car does look suspiciously like the Kadee car, but it's a dollar cheaper.  Maybe the proportions differ.

Looks too big to be a 6,000 gallon car. The Broadway car looks better. Oh, well.

I don't remember a tank like this from Freight Car Cyclopedia 2, the AC&F tank cars book, or the AC&F book.

Hopefully the tank represents some sort of prototype. But since it looks like the tank bands are molded onto the tank (like the Bluebox "chemical" tank), my expectations are low.

Now, now.

I believe the Mainline 60' P-S flat is pretty adequate.  They also have a pretty adequate 5-platform well car in Mainline.  And the only G85 you can buy.  True, all of this are post 1960 (the flat?).

But, back to the olden days, their NW2/SW7 is really quite a nice locomotive IF you want the as-delivered version (quite likely, here).  They come with no added road specific details, but those were almost always added post-delivery.

It this a rework of the Train Miniatures tank car? This 1969 catalog promotes a 36’ tankcar: standard car, insulated car, chemical car. Walthers acquired the Train Miniatures line in the 1980s and I believe has been releasing updated versions of the cars.

About 1972 at a Train Show in Orange County, California I saw some pre-release models of the Train Miniature standard single dome tank car (36 foot?) and waited anxiously for their release. But I am sure none of the TM tank cars were ever released. Train Miniature went out of business about 1978 and I believe Walthers acquired all the molds, including the tank cars.

Could well be.  A Google search and one of the MR 75 year file turned up zero photos.  Walthers has had the original tank car it its line for a long time.  A few years ago, I turned one of them into an erstatz UTLX X-3.

Here is that car from 2015.  I did most of the work on the underframe of this model, but I can’t find any photos documenting what I did.  I know I moved the shallow V braces from the ends of the car to under the middle to support the running boards and created new side and end sills from styrene.
