Another decal question

Clark Propst

I don't have a very good batting average with decals right now...I started decaling the RCW ATSF 50' DD rebuilt box car mini-kit. Did the map side just fine, looked at the model photos on the website and.......The model's slogan is "The Scout for economy travel West". The decals supplied don't have that slogan. I have "The Chief to California" and "EL Capitan coach Streamliner West". I modeled number 7000 a general service car. Could one of the slogan's I have work for it?

Thank you!!

If you are modeling an Fe-22…
7031 is recorded in 1/41 with GRAND CANYON
7071 is recorded in 1945 with CHIEF
7125 is recorded in 8/44 with CHIEF
These from info in the SFRH&MS in the Santa Fe Painting & Lettering Guide, Vol. Ten, John Signor, 2021.

If you are modeling an Fe-21…
7350-7399 All were lettered with GRAND CANYON
7352 is recorded in 11/40 with GRAND CANYON
Same source as above.

Hope that this is of some help.

Good evening,

May I ask the difference between the Fe-21 and 22?  I see the 21 mentioned in the kit instructions, a long with a single door car.  The LL kit I have as a base is a double door car, which I'm assuming is the difference?

Thanks,

The Fe-21 is somewhat an odd group in the Fe classes. These were rebuilt from Fe-S class. The original plan was to rebuild these as double door  cars with dreadnaught end doors at the A end. A last minute change to the plan to rebuild these as single door cars without end doors for use as auto parts cars. The first five cars (7350-7354) were nearing completion when the change was made so were the only members of this group (7350-7399) to have single doors and end doors.

When I was searching to answer Clark’s question I went looking for 50ft FEs in the seven thousand numbers. The Fe-21 and Fe-22 cars were found. The little gray cell in charge of remembering that the Fe-21s were single door cars was asleep at the switch and the master of gray cell control failed to catch the oversight regarding the Fe-21s being single door cars.

The Fe-22 cars (7000-7149, 150 cars) were intended for general service. These were also rebuilds of the Fe-S class.

My precious transmission of identified train name slogans was for cars with the system map on the opposite side. Two of this class are confirmed with the “Ship & Travel” … 7065 was stenciled with EL CAPITAN and 7137 with SUPER CHIEF. I believe that Clark is concerned with a car carrying the Map.

This info is from the SFRH&MS Painting & Lettering Guide, Vol. Ten, and the Furniture & Automobile Box Cars, Vol. Three.

Hope that this is of some help.
