ATSF Flat Cars

there are several ATSF flatcars photographed in 1985 that appear to be quite old, but the road numbers are not in my 1963 ORER.
Perhaps they are renumbered for MOW or specialized service?
Might anybody recognize an earlier number series for these cars?

thank you

Those are MOW numbers. ATSF MOW cars are usually painted silver, as this one is.

Thanks!

Interesting photo of a flat car that took a bit of research to identify.

1.  Santa Fe work cars had the first letter of car classification changed to "W" from the revenue car class.   Wt-16 stencilling implies Ft-16.  Ft-16s were drawbar connected Ft-M flatcars used in TOFC service.  About 202 Ft-Ms were converted into 101 Ft-16s beginning in 1958.
2.  The 40'0" length stencilled is incorrect and confusing.   Ft-Ms were 44'6".
3.  Stake pocket numbers and positions match Ft-M photos.  The double vertical rivet rows appear to match also.
4.  The stencilled 1924 build date is correct for the 500 car Ft-M class.
5. There was a 200 car Ft-L class of 50'0" length built  in 1924 with fishbelly side sills but the stake pockets are located differently and there are no double vertical river rows.

This is an Ft-M that avoided the lengthening to 53'6" and application of bulkheads of the early 50's that some of these cars experienced.  It later became a drawbar connected TOFC car.

The original number series was 97001-97500.  469 of the original 500 were in the January 1953 ORER.

Some more Ft-M's.

That photo of 97085 is one of the Colonel McCoid photos from Bob.

Ft-M's from 1953, 1956, 1964, and so on - some rebuilds paired as a 90 foot TOFC flat
