Brake gear for MDT steel reefers

Ron Merrick

I'm trying to identify the brake gear (power handbrake) used on MDT all-steel reefers.  The book and rr-fallenflags have lots of views of the A end of these cars, but the B end  mostly only appears in side views.  Handwheel is visible, as a six-spoke type, but I can't identify the gear itself other than it's not Ajax.   It's possible that most of the different series have similar or identical brake gear.

Any suggestions?

Ron, what series of MDT reefers are you looking for? Many MDT drawings are available through the New York Central System Historical Society, which I have easy access to most that have been digitized.

Roger Hinman published MDT drawings in Mainline Modeler Oct 2000, Nov 2000 and April 2004.

Thanks for the replies.  First, I'll say I have the paper copies of most of those magazines.

I'm specifically thinking about the 12000 series cars, lot 891 of 1953-54, but other series from that general era are also of interest to me.

MDT seemed to like Miner equipment on the steel cars

I looked thorugh a bunch of photos of the 12000 series and there were no good clear end shots, mostly 3Q but it still appears to be a Miner wheel on those also.

OK, that tells me what I need to know.  I have enough parts here that I can do this.

Thanks.
