Broadway Limited 6, 000 Gallon Tank Cars/ Walthers newly-announced tank cars - same prototype?

O Fenton Wells

Nice save Steve.  Good job on an old car.  I re-did a few Varneys but your looks better

Could well be.  A Google search and one of the MR 75 year file turned up zero photos.  Walthers has had the original tank car it its line for a long time.  A few years ago, I turned one of them into an erstatz UTLX X-3.

Here is that car from 2015.  I did most of the work on the underframe of this model, but I can’t find any photos documenting what I did.  I know I moved the shallow V braces from the ends of the car to under the middle to support the running boards and created new side and end sills from styrene.

It this a rework of the Train Miniatures tank car? This 1969 catalog promotes a 36’ tankcar: standard car, insulated car, chemical car. Walthers acquired the Train Miniatures line in the 1980s and I believe has been releasing updated versions of the cars.

Wow did T-M ever actually produce a tank car, or a caboose ?? I have seen quite a few T-M models but just
hoppers, box cars, reefers, and stock cars. But almost certainly, no tank car - That would be a revelation. :-)

Steve that's the best disguise I've ever seen for the Walthers tank car! Nice job. :-)

Fenton, Tim,

Thanks for the kind comments.  I noticed that I captured a snipped photographic relic right on the running board in the photo that I posted.  It was NOT part of the model!  :>)

I had a set made by Rail Graphics some time ago, as I didn’t like the Champ’s all that well.

I know that Ryan has updated Ted’s UTLX set, as we discussed that quite a bit on a Zoom call and they are quite nice and comprehensive.

My set is/was $5.00 plus a SSAE and will do as many as 5 cars.  Ryan’s will do 10.

I believe the frame is. I recall being shown this frame molding at Walthers sometime in the eighties... It's distinctive, maybe unique in the way the outward angled sill steps allow the steps to be molded integral with simple 'open and close' tooling, no side actions required.

Back to the original questions, are any dealers willing to split up 2-packs for sale as individual models? I am looking for a single car from the 7661 and 7665 sets.
