F&C crappy decals again...
Clark Propst
Just went to decal a BAR SS box car I bought as a bag kit last summer when I bought the Pennsy car that had bad decals. Again, the decals broke up! I may have enough to do the car after the coating dries, but they are so poorly printed I would prefer a second choice. I checked NSC and K4 no luck. Anyone know of an early set for these cars?
Thank you!!

Highball does a lot of New England roads, and the quality of their decals is excellent

If I suspect that a decal will fall apart I will test a small piece without lettering first. If it fails or bad past experience directs me I will use the Micro-Scale decal film in a bottle. That stuff works. However, some decals are not worth saving if there are other alternatives.

Clark, can you define "early"? The
F&C instruction sheet shows several schemes for these cars.

My guess is
the cars came with just the road name on the right, next came the white shield
and lastly the shield with the white lettering. Either of the first two would
do.

I usually do that too. These are so bad that even painting them
with decal film didn’t work. Matter of fact, it washed off some of the ink. Just
shitty decals and really not worth using even it they stayed together...I will
do some research before buying another F&C kit to make sure there are backup
decals available. I will say that both the kits I bought at the StL RPM last
summer had substandard disintegrating decals. Could have been the paper both
were printed on?

Another factor. F&C just throws their decals in a box. Both kits you bought were older releases. Things could have just gotten old. With all the traveling and temperature cycles they go through it’s not surprising.

I have side stepped this issue by leaving old (aged) decals on the backing and photocopying them onto fresh decal paper with a laser printer. Use of a photoshop program can render defects and backing paper colours transparent.
The last time I did this my laser printer at home would not render the whites white, leaving them dirty and grey looking. A short trip to the printing department of the local office supply to use their commercial laser printer was made. I had to supply my own laser paper decal sheets, but the resulting decals were a success with the white ares remaining white.
