GTW 50’ Auto Box

Group is there a published roster of 5/5 ended 50’ 10’ IH both single door and double door boxes with and with out end doors that can be modeled with the Proto 2000/Walthers boxes?

The reason I’m asking is GTW 591383 traversed my modeling era at the time I’m modeling and would like to model the car. From copies of ORERs it appears that it was a member of GTW 591200-591399 series. I was able to find a photo of GTW 591263.

From first glance it appears to match the P2K/Walthers auto box. I have an already decorated GTW P2K auto box with end door but it is from the 591400-591599 series. Could modeling 591263 be as easy as changing the number? The three ORERs that I checked do not say if the 591200 or 591400 series had end doors or not. 

Any direction would be appropriate

The pictured car had end doors but may be sealed so does not show in the ORERs

Seth & group, I agree with Bill on the sealing of end doors. That appears to be the case in my 1965 ORER.

The 1955 ORER lists.573000-099 classified XM, no end doors

Seth,

The number of panels and size differs compared to the Proto car vs the car in your photo. GTW did have cars that match the Proto cars number of panels and sizes though. I modelled one of the cars you are interested in by re-panelling the sides and other details. I also did a write up on my blog.

I have pictures of 10-6 cars. (They may be stenciled 10-4 because of interior auto racks.) I don't know of any 10-0 GTW cars.

Hello-
About 20 years (maybe more) ago the late Terry Wegmann, Dan Smith and I went to a trucking company near O'Hare airport on a suggestion by Ron Sebastion. The genesis of our visit was to view 3 50' box cars used for the trucking company's own storage use. One car caught my interest, a still original paint GTW double door auto car with diagonal panel roof with the outer roof panels using the earlier rectangular raised panel design. Terry told me it was most likely substituted to allow clearance for an Evan auto loader rack system, which suggests Stanray Co had at least a few earlier panels in stock.

In addition to it being an end loading door box car I grabbed a P2K DD box car upon my return home. P2k box cars used the construction of the roof molded as part of the car body with a seperate floor and underframe like the Atheran BB design. To save the angst of wrestling the difficult fit of the end of the roof to the end door, I left behind the terminal panel leaving the cap seem filed down to the exact center, a perfect spot to hide the joints of the added roof. I recall that the riveted side panel count was off by one panel, something I felt that I would live with.

Somewhere I have pictures taken that day in Chicago land.
