inexpensive kit-bash
Chuck Cover
Group,
I purchased an old Walthers gondola kit at the PRRT&HS for a dollar back in 2019. I was not sure what I would do with it, but it was a bargain. One of my operators had some Shapeways spiral gondola ends made and he gave a set to me. I wondered if I could use them, so I did a little research. I found a Monon gondola that I though fit the bill. Not much to describe here, I built the kit substituting the Shapeways ends and adding some details such as some standard underbody brake and end details. The decals are from Tichy.

Looking good, Chuck! Another modeler has used the same car end print on an Intermountain USRA gon.

I think your model was originally a Proto1000 release. Finding it for $1 is pretty lucky! Eric Hansmann Murfreesboro, TN

Nice job Chuck. Thank you for the end view on the prototype. I too have a couple pairs of the spiral ends that I intend to modify the Intermountain car. John,
Chad Boas told me Shapeways offers the ends in their line. Should be a drop in replacement.

Nice car Chuck! How were the Tichy decals to work with?

I recently finished the same kitbash using the an undec IM USRA gon as the starting point. The spiral ends available from Shapeways are a drop in replacement of the kits ends. Very easy conversion. The car is waiting its trip through the paint shop and now have a question on what color would be correct for the late 1920s, Freight Car Red or Black? --

I know that Tichy decals have been discussed previously on this list and some have said that they are too thick and hard to work with. However, I have used Tichy decals for a number of projects when the kit does not come with decals or I want to letter for a different road. I have found them to be easy to work with and they look fine to me on the finished models. I use the same process as with other decal products. Attached are a few photos of models for which I used Tichy decals.

Mont Switzer
Rene,
As far as I know those cars were painted freight car red like the old Floquil Boxcar Red.
It appears that a few cars were rebuilt after WWII for on-line quarry to mill service. Those cars appear to be black.
Roster notes indicate all of these cars were off of the revenue roster by the end of 1949.

Chuck --
Nice work, and brings back a modeling memory. Several years ago at Naperville, Chad Boas offered these spiral dreadnaught ends for sale, and I couldn't pass them up. The carbody is InterMountain (for considerably more than Chuck's dollar!), with the result attached.
Monon had some fun rolling stock....

Bob Chapman

I have not found them objectionable, though I would prefer not to have the (minimal) 3-D aspect. Tony Thompson

Near as I can tell this was a proprietary design developed by car builder Haskell & Barker. I base this on the fact that all three groups of cars known to have these ends were built by H&B, and the fact that there are detail drawings in the H&B files now at the Pullman Library beyond what was typical for vendor supplied ends. Hi Chuck and Jim,
I'm glad this topic was raised and discussed a
little.
In N scale, we have far fewer decal options
available than HO. AFAIK the entire Tichy decal line is available in N, so this
makes them a significant pool to draw upon for my future projects.
