Intermountain 42700 FGE Wood Reefer
Richard Gortowski
I'm looking to build some FGE re-built wood reefers. Bill Welch's 2005 article said to start with the Intermountain 42700 undecorated wood reefer. A search on the web fails to turn up anything except that apparently Intermountain discontinued making these. Nothing on eBay, either. Does anyone know the story on these cars? It doesn't appear that there is much at all on this model in the archives.
Thanks,
Rich G

Rich,
I suggest calling IM directly. Typically though, you need to order these when released and IM has been less than enthusiastic about running undec "kits" alongside the decorated runs. I would also suggest setting up a running search on eBay.
These cars are the post WWII rebuilds with 12' 11" height from the rail to the eave. Note that the model is actually 2" short, so it is halfway between the 1928 cars at 12' 8" and the late 1940s rebuilds. A number of us sanded the bodies down to match the 1928
height, and one of my freinds further reduced the body to the 1922 car height!
BTW, a search of "IM FGE" gets 54 hits in the archives... lots there to get started on your project, once you find the kit.

Bruce

Bruce,
Intermountain doesn't even list this style under Refrigerator Cars and I found one reference to "discontinued." I'll just set up an eBay alert - thanks
I didn't think to search under "IM FGE" - though having done that, almost all the posts are at least 10 years old. Several from you!

Rich,
Like I said, call Intermountain. They only sell kits directly. Trying to reserve through a dealer will be a waste of time as the order will likely not be fulfilled. What "Reserve Now" means is that they MAY run the undec kits the next time they run the car.
The lady I have dealt with there was always super nice and might even tell you when they expect to run them again.

Richard, Bruce is right on but failed to mention his excellent series of FGEX articles in the Keystone Modeler. Part 1 in Winter of 2013, covered the BRE Reefer Upgrade using the Accurail kit(which is available) then Part 2, in Spring of 2013 covering the FGE 1922 cars(and WFEX). Part 3 covering the IM cars in Winter of 2014. These are excellent and can give you many alternatives for the FGE family of reefers. Plus Westerfield's R7 is also available for further consist variety. If you bash a few Accurail 1922 era cars following Bill's articles and still want the 1927 versions(the taller cars) and the post war rebuilds then you should be able to bash these using evergreen, Accurail, Grandt Line parts.
I have also done some rebuild bashes using the Accurail R7 underframe and evergreen, Grandt line and other parts. Sunshine als had the cars in both the 1922, 1927 and the War Emergency versions. Also an ACF fishbelly version (Westerfield) would not be out of place if lettered properly.
FGEX was a mish mash of car designs with all the cars they inherited and built in their own shops and hopefully when Bill Welch's book on the subject is released that will all be available.
Let me know if you need anymore FGE info, it's one of my favorite subjects(I'm no Bill Welch) but learning

Fenton,
Thanks for this information. I had located the first article on the BRE cars last week, but didn't realize that there were two additional articles on the FGE cars. Thanks to Bruce for writing those! I printed them and I've printed the special issue that Bill Welch allowed the Societies to print. Time to do some research
Thanks, all.

Richard, If you don't mind stripping paint (or perhaps even preserving the FGEX paint job) Perry's Hobbies website says they have them in stock. Scroll down to "FGE Wood Reefers" on their webpage: https://www.perryshobbies.com/HOPages/IntermountainCars.html I bought one of these cars from them a couple years ago.
BTW, does anyone know if the WIF lettering on this car is a "foobie" (*see attached).

Intermountain seems to have decided that undec kits don't sell well, so they have discontinued most of them, including the FGE wood reefer. However, Accurail makes an undec kit for a wood sheathed reefer that is closely modeled on a BREX prototype, and that can be kitbashed into other FGE models with relative ease. The articles covering these kitbashes are in past issues of the Keystone Modeler magazines, available on the PRRH&TS site as PDF downloads or on CD. My collection of the articles is on my other, older computer at home (I am away currently).
Rich, remember that very few FGEX family reefers were alike. So if you want a few ( or more) you will need variety

Thanks to everyone who helped with my questions on FGE models. I've purchased and printed a lot of information on "Our Companies" and I can look at the different and easiest ways to model the BREX/WFGX/FGEX fleet. As Fenton suggests, there are several good starting points to build a group of different cars for my 1950 timeframe.

Technically it's a foobie model, but it's a reasonable 'stand in' for the WIF 700-749 series
WIF also had an all steel FGE built 40 foot mechanical reefer #800.
