Just say ‘thanks for your trouble’

Charlie Duckworth

After posting images of a resin car I’d built recently I received a private email saying that the sender had bought the same car at a swap meet and it was missing the instructions and PDS.  He asked if I could send him the paperwork.   I went down to basement and got my scanner, located the paperwork, scanned and emailed what he’d asked for probably 20 minutes of effort.  No response on receiving my email for the past two days so I asked him yesterday ‘did you get my PDF’?

Still being ghosted - needless to say it makes one think twice about helping the next guy when this happens.

On a kinder, gentler note, maybe the guy’s internet is down, or he’s off the grid for a few days.

Seriously ! At our age memory and health and habits ain't what they used to be... I've been
known not to read email for weeks at a time. Maybe he didn't expect such a wonderful turn,
done so quickly! You did good, give yourself credit. I think the Sunshine inst & data files are
'public domain' now correct? Post the PDF to the RealSTMFC group data files and you help
a thousand people! :-)

email asking for into" and doesn't know the problem is on his end.  *G*

I agree that if he got the info he should have acknowledged it - just pointing out
that there are many 'dependencies' on the use of the web/email/whatever and
many guys don't know what works or why.

Gents, I semi-retired as a field sales engineer this year, I've owned Narrow Gauge Modeling Co. for seven years, member of the Freemasons, and sponsor two train shows.  I note this because, it is not uncommon for me to have 100 emails a day to which I respond to every valid one.  That said, I can tell you one consistent problem . . . people no longer check their email or messaging on FB.  It is not uncommon that I have to prod people 2-3 times to get a response.  If they do, it is clearly from their phone or tablet where the answers are short and/or incomplete.  The second issue is firewalls.  My website sits on a well known hosting company and I am told regularly, my emails are going to their spam folder.  This should not be the case but it happens.  Large files often take that path, particularly if it is a large file, which most scans are.

To accommodate this, I enter my email in the cc address so a copy goes back to my email inbox.  I wait for a response and then send the same way again asking "did you receive this."  I would guess 80% respond eventually which really helps my business.  That said, I find myself regularly picking up the phone and in fact with the Freemasons, we went back to the phone tree.  Communications are going full circle.

Dont let it discourage you from helping anyone. Ive had something similar happen to me. Turned out it was just a mishap in communication/not checking email etc.

Good on you for helping him though in a timely manner, some might have just waited around till who knows how long!

Public flogging by email can push someone completely out of our hobby. We all have personal or work issues that flare up and consume our time. My own attention has been diverted to several family issues since early June. And I was kicked to the curb by Covid for several days to start July. Email has not been a priority.

I suggest a follow up email in a few days. Encourage the modeler to snap and send a few progress images. They might not start the model for another month. I started a Westy kit June 1st and it’s been lagging on my workbench. Other issues have demanded my attention and hobby time has suffered. It happens to us all.

Now excuse me while I finish mowing the lawn before it hits 90 degrees.

Interesting thread.  Regardless of the internet being down, work schedules, etc.  The requester asked for the information, work was done to accommodate him/her, and a simple thank you is just so simple, this is, as Eric posted, rude.  If the requestor was asking for information, it is hard to assume that he/she was not planning to work on the resin model for a few months.

Also keep in mind that both of your emails may have gotten diverted into a spam folder without the recipient ever knowing they were there.  Particularly common when a message has an attachment, and even more so if the attachment is fairly large.

Charlie and All-

Most Model Railroaders are appreciative of others when they extend a courtesy.

Perhaps it is just an instance of life (or these days illness!) getting in the way.   I’ve had stuff fall throught the cracks and not see responses to questions I’ve posed until I start doing a cleanup of my inbox due to being away…between business, the groups I belong to and unsolicited junk I get upwards of 200 emails a day.

If it is just ignorance perhaps the jailer might want to watch out for any further posts from the individual looking for help!

Kevin-

Because of some groups that insisted on using Facebook I have to “go there” occasionally but I do not use it.  Too much useless selfie mentality posts on friends updates.
“Social Media” is slanted towards stream of consciousness mentality without capacity for organization or later retrieval.  If anyone is waiting for an answer from me through Facebook Messenger they are going to be disappointed.  I don’t see any redeeming value to it over email.

Thank you STMFC leaders for going to groups.io which doesn’t require me to go online to participate unless I want to do some research into past discussion items or reference material….which is very doable.

Charlie,

I just checked my Spam/Junk folder and found 14 messages - all from this group (including, ironically, some from this thread). I think the reason for so many may be some  of those messages being clear examples of someone in the group having been hacked “Check this photo out, recognize these two” is the content.

Again, not trying to make excuses, just offering an alternative.

As I said, people don't answer emails . . it takes 2-3 times to get a replies. Some of the guys with less appropriate replies need to think before talking.
