Latest project from the Southern Piedmont shops DT&I USRA rebuild with Climax radial roof No 11799

O Fenton Wells

This is a combined effort from Rich Christy who provided the roof from an Atlas 1932 boxcar to Andy Carlson who made the resin casting of the roof who sent it to me and I cut down a Tichy USRA rebuild kit and applied the roof.  The roof had to be widened a bit but then the car went to gether in the normal fashion.  I used Scale coat II Rust for the color and K4 decals to letter it.  Accurail fish belly added to the underbody.  Thes cars were later converted to plug door insulated boxcars on the DT&I and were renumbered in the 19xxx series.
I like the unusual look of the car.

Fenton,

Very nice model of a neat looking prototype.

I wonder if any of our mini-kit producers would be interested in a mini kit of this car?  It certainly has appeal.

Todd Sullivan

O Fenton Wells

i think it would be a neat kit, but i'm a bit biased, I'm afraid

That’s a pretty cool model, Fenton! An interesting combination of hardware for a rebuild. How many did the DT&I have?

I checked the ORER and in '53 they had 300.

Is this the source for the insulated boxcars such as this?  I believe a similar one was on this list (or somewhere similar) recently, lettered for GB&W with WRX reporting marks.

Really interesting model, Fenton, and nicely finished. I agree with those who think it could be nice mini-kit.

Thanks Charlie.  I've seen prototype photos where it looked like the shop that did the stenciling didn't have the correct font so they shot what they had.  I kinda liked the look

Rich, You could start with an Accurail plug door car.  You can do a great job with that.
