Model: SFRD 32670 (Rr-23)
Model: SFRD 32670 (Rr-23)
A Richard Hendrickson model.
Notice the reporting marks stenciled on the hatch covers.
I have no other information about this model.
The prototype SFRD 32670 was a class Rr-23 refrigerator car rebuilt in 1937 or 1938 from a class Rr-W refrigerator car. 1,373 Class Rr-Ws reefers were rebuilt into Rr-23s from the underframe up so the steel sides, ends and roof of this car date from 1937-38. Notice that the car retained its swing doors from 1937-38 and did not receive sliding plug doors. Another 127 Rr-X reefers also were rebuilt into Rr-23s.
The Rr-W class was a USRA design and goes back to 1920. These were the first Santa Fe refrigerator cars to use a deep "fish belly" underframe rather than truss rods.
Of the 1,500 original Rr-23s put in service 1,447 were still on the Live List in 1956. This was down to 588 in 1968, 311 in 1971 and just 40 in 1974. All were gone by 1978 but some probably were used in company service for a time.
