New paint bottles
Schuyler Larrabee
I’ve been off the list for a few years, getting involved with some other issues, not model railroading related. But I am happily getting back to building things in HO scale, including a few freight cars.
Years ago, Bill Welch posted a source for obtaining new, empty, Floquil-equivalent bottles. I promptly bought around 20, maybe a couple dozen bottles, in two sizes, both using the same caps (and not incidentally, fitting my Binks airbrush.
I carefully saved that information in a very safe place. So safe I cannot find it.
I’ve tried to figure out what bottles would serve, but there is a rather bewildering array of bottle sizes, and the threads on the bottles and caps come in a wide variety of pitches.
I am in need of new clean bottles. I searched the list archives tonight for a couple of hours, without success. Anybody have information on where one can buy such bottles?

For new bottles, air brushes and Model Flex paint in railroad colors try:

You can buy empty Tamiya glass bottles off ebay. Not sure that they would fit your Binks or not though.

That link is taking forever to resolve. Searching the site for G080 resulted in this page. https://www.containerandpackaging.com/products/62/glass-packer-bottle/G080

I make any bottle fit my Binks bottom feed airbrush by drilling whatever holes are required to mount one of the lids to the Binks paint suction fitting. I have made longer suction tubes from copper tubing for deeper bottles. A piece of silicon tubing pushed onto the existing tube would probably work and be easier.

THANKS very much, Fred. I got another link, off list, for this same note, and maybe I can get what I want from this link. I will talk to the company this leads to and see if they can provide a 2 oz. bottle, which I believe is the size Floquil used back in the day. I need for that because I know that will fit my Binks airbrush.
Yeah, yeah, the Binks company no longer makes airbrushes in useful for modeling size (but they do much larger equipment today). But I have used my Binks Wren since about 1974, and am asked what kind of brush I use, because the questioner wants to emulate my results, so . . .

Good method, Mark.
I have done similar things for renegade bottles, but what I am seeking is NEW bottles. I mix paint to get colors not otherwise available and also for thinning paints that need to be thinned to successfully airbrush. I’ve used all but a couple of the bottles I bought “back when I knew where to order them,” but as I have mentioned, the information to do so has been stored in an exceptionally safe place in my computer. So safe I cannot find it.

Schuyler,
The Binks Wren airbrush is still being sold as a new item, but at a hideously high price:
Ebay has a number of htem for ssle t much more reasonable prices.

I have three Binks Wren airbrushed (bought years ago) designated for black, color and clear paints. I also have a fair stash if Floquil bottles. Regretfully the Floquil bottles are slightly deeper than the bottles supplied with the Wren airbrush. Thus the siphon does not reach the bottom of the bottle making it inconvenient as the paint runs low. I was able to obtain some proper bottles a few years ago by searching Binks Wren bottles on the internet. Another after market addition are tube shaped filters that fit over the siphon. I forger where I got these from but there were several sources. Schuyler, I believe the standard round Floquil bottles were 1 oz bottles. I would love to find a dozen or so of them. I can't buy 240 plus caps. Fenton On Sun, Mar 5, 2023 at 5:50 PM Schuyler Larrabee via groups.io <schuyler.larrabee=verizon.net@groups.io> wrote:

Floquil RR were 1 oz and their military and specialty colors were 1/2 oz. As we specialize in out of production paint, the number one issue with many of these new bottles is that they do not seal well. I tried to find the source for the Floquil bottles but was unsuccessful.

The poly-seal is the key in my opinion. Those old Floquil bottle caps have a fragile liner that deteriorates with multiple opens and closes and eventually fails. And then the paint polymerizes in the bottle. These caps and the Tamiya caps are poly-seals and are utterly reliable and do not deteriorate. And plastic bottles of any kind are awful -- the best seal is achieved with a glass bottle and a poly-seal cap.

As a totally stuck in the mud user of solvent-based paints such as Floquil, I wonder how the sealer inside the lid will hold up to the solvent. I contacted the supplier who didn't know but said that for us to do the testing ourselves. Up to 10 samples, mix of lids and bottles, can be ordered for $7.50. My interest is Floquil and lacquer paints . I plan to order the following lids for testing which I presume will take a week or so for the results of the interaction between and the lid liner to become apparent:
L151 Silver metal 28-400 lid with foam liner L011White metal 28-400 lid with standard plastisol liner L993WHPL1 White metal 28-400 lid with standard plastisol liner L084N Black phenolic 28-400 lid with LDPE polycone liner To order samples, click use the chat dialog in the lower right corner of the window. Presumably all the PP plastic lids won't work. It may be possible to recover the seals from empty/dead Floquil bottles or just reuse the lids. Now I know why I've been saving them. To Bill Pardie, if the siphon on your lid is not metal, some airbrush suppliers sell lengths of siphon material which you can cut to work in your bottles. IIRC Badger is one of them. |
