re the thread on wood siding:

In 1973 I was riding a freight train which stopped next to a NP war
emergency box car on the adjacent track- the board joints on this car were
so tight it was virtually impossible to tell whether the car was in fact
wood sheathed or steel from 6ft. distance.After several minutes of CAREFUL
observation, I saw it was in fact wood. Just an example of one extreme in
the "how visible should board joints be?"continuum...
