ORER Tank car question
Eric Thur
Would anyone have access to a 1950 ORER? I would like if any of these three Tank cars were still listed in 1950 as still being in revenue service? S.S.I.X 100 Series, M.H.T.X 800 Series, and D.A.X. 25. Any information is appreciated.

Looking at my April 1950 edition, Diamond Alkali’s listing shows no car numbers below 32. The Herald Mangels co. (MHTX) does show 9 cars in the 800 series. In this Register, SSIX is not shown as an assigned reporting mark. Tony Thompson |

It looks like SSIX disappeared into GATX about 1935. The SSIX marks are in an ORER under GATX in 1935, but are not there in 1938.
In July 1950 ORER the lowest DAX number is 32.
MHTX 801 and 802 are shown in July 1950.

Were the SSIX cars leased from Pennsylvania-Conley Tank Car, which went into General American in 1935? As of April 1930, this was the Standard Silicate’s entry in the ORER.
Beyond that, I can’t tell. In 1935, under GATX, there is only one line of data, listing SSIX numbers between 10 and 115 with no quantity listed.

The tank car capacity tariff lists individual cars, so it can help fill the void when the ORER listing doesn't show quantities in a number range.
For SSIX, the 1936 listing shows 14 cars: 30,40,50,60,70,90,100, 103-106, 108,111,113 Unfortunately by the timeframe of the OP, they'd disappeared into the GATX fleet. Jack Mullen |
