Just a note, one of Ed Wolfe's book on the Interstate Railroad has a photo taken in the early1960's, iirc, showing a Lehigh Valley twin hopper being re-railed at an Interstate Coal Mine in southwest Virginia.  Not over Sherman Pass, but out of LV's territory.

Probably the chalk markings are big because it was so hard to get scale size decals back in 1925.
