X31A perhaps? Patches all along the bottom.

Yes, the patches are characteristic of older X31-types.
Notice that the patches are now rusted out.

   Any ORER will tell you that yes, it's an X31A. PRR helpfully included classes in listings.

How would that end up in a field in Nevada?   Sold off from a derailment or something?

Most likely, yes, either from the railroad paying out for the wreck or the scrap dealer who got the car afterwards.
