Photo: SFRD 35258 (Rr-28) Photo courtesy of former Santa Fe engineer Rebecca Wellet on the Facebook If You Work(Ed) On The Railroad group. Photo location and date not stated. Santa Fe Railway photo. In 1940 cars in the Rr-W, X, Y, 2, 3 and 4 classes (Built in 1920-1926) were rebuilt into the Rr-28 class and numbered 35000-35499. Initially there were 500 Rr-28 cars with the surviving 337 cars modernized in 1955 and renumbered in the 18000-18999 series. Many cars in this class received sliding plug doors through the modernization program, however, SFRD 35258 still has its old number and swing doors. The side sill reinforcement below the door opening possibly was added before 1955. There were 145 Rr-28 cars on the roster in 1971. The last three made to 1977. Photos of Rr-28 cars before the renumbering appear on Pages 140 and 141 of the Santa Fe reefer book. My thanks to Keith Jordan for background on the Rr-28 class. My notes show the same 145 cars in Rr-28 in 1971, however, I show the cars renumbered from 35000-35499 and then to 18500-18999. I think you forgot the '5' in the last group.
These were USRA cars and retained their fishbelly underfames & 4/4 ends, but received reinforcement plates under the doors, new diagonal panel roofs with standard type ice hatches without the wood platforms and ASF trucks. Most received sliding doors as mentioned before but many retained their 60''x71" swinging doors. The attached 1974 photo of 18638 by Peter Arnold shows an electric fan over the 'A' end truck, modified rivet patterns on the side sheets and the standard-type ice hatch covers. The 1970 photo of 18780 shows the plug door version that outnumbered swinging doors 3 to 1 (unknown photographer, my collection).

I think it is a good assumption that 35258 has just been repainted but has yet to be reweighed. The LD LMT AND LT WT data has yet to be applied. Maybe when the workman finishes applying the repack data the car will be taken to the scales. The weigh station and date info has already been applied so the trip to the scales is imminent. This is San Bernardino in October 1951. Great photo! |

The side sill reinforcement below the door opening has yet to be added to the car.
