Looks like a broken gun barrel.  Just above the stake pocket between the "VA." and "320" appears to be a broken end.

Or is that a second, shorter barrel?

That looks like a normal breech to me on that shorter barrel.

The car is carrying two gun barrels, and behind them two pedestal mounts.  Based on overall size and general appearance, with some uncertainty I'd guesstimate the larger gun as 6"/50 and the other 3"/50. Not gonna try for a specific mark and mod.   ;^)
