It seems odd to see that UP express box in that string of cars.  Weren’t they reserved for express service?

On express box cars, they sometimes were returned to the owner's road in freight trains heading in that direction.
The could be empty or carrying clean, non-express lading on the return trip.
Likely the 96 car train of combines was run through like a special to Pendleton, making it an ideal train in which to put the UP express box car.
This train would not be broken up for classification along the way, just inspection, change of power and crew as it moved from one carrier to the next.
The route to Pendleton may have been directed to UP's easternmost connection.
Once the express box reached UP rails, obligation for its return ended.

Hello,

John Deere's combine plant was in East Moline, Ill and started out either on Milw or CBQ. Both roads went to Omaha to the UP.
