pre PS1 box cars

Didn't want to put PS-0 in the subject line. A friend is building the old green dot kit which only has the main body pieces. I had good photo of the CGW and NKP cars. I searched my magazine collection for any articles, but couldn't find any. I don't know who all owned them or if there were any differences between owners.

Thanks Ben. They bought 1000 40 ton boxcars from Pullman Standard
in 1940, 20000-20999. The drawing in the diagram book doesn't
show as many panels as the FandC model. Here's a photo, 10 panel
ends so it's probably not the same car.

Good afternoon, I'm struggling through the F&C kit now. Instructions note 100-B&LE 50-CGW 50-UP Improved underframe: 200-NKP 200-W&LEqlw 100-PM RPCyc 31-32 has been very helpful. I'll be using Yarmouth 18", 7 rung ladders, they seem to match photos in the cyc. Not sure what I am doing for grabs yet. The sill step has an extra brace on the UP cars, and the running board support is...funky. Cheers Greg |

Information taken from the F&C instruction sheet for " PS-0 40' 1938 Pullman Welded Boxcar" sic. 1938 "200 cars were constructed, 100 cars going to the Bessemer & Lake Erie with 6even panel Superior doors, 50 to the Chicago Great Western 6 uneven panel Superior doors and 50 to the Union Pacific as follows:The first 25 featured regular dreadnought ends, Murphy Panel roof and Creco doors, the balance matched the CGW cars"........ A second group of 500 was constructed in 1940. These improved cars featured an end with one additional "dart", and seven panel doors. The major change was th underframe, with three longitudinal members between the side sill and center sill - essentially a PS - 1 underframe."............." (200) Nickel Plate Road. (200) Wheeling and Lake Erie and 100 Pere Marquette. Hope this helps. |

The IC continued to buy whole or partial kits for a much longer time period. But these particular PS-0 (sorry) cars were not purchased by the IC nor were they sold as kits. This is the IC car built in 1947 (29500-30499). If they were a PS kit they still included SRE dreadnaught ends and SRE rectangular panel roofs. Thank you Ben. A potentially useful photo for me as l have the F&C kit. Can anyone tell me why the large lettering often looks slightly indistinct and blurred as in this photo? Is it a highly reflective paint? Has the painter not put the stencil right on the car side when spraying painting? Is it a self cleaning paint that wears away as it gets dirty to reveal another layer of clean paint? Any definite answers appreciated. |

Interesting that they applied a whitewash to the underframe for the publicity photo. Might be interesting to model it that way.

The whitewash used for underframes (or the builder gray used for some photos) was hosed off before delivery, so modeling it would seem a little odd, unless you’re modeling the builder’s yard.
